Being weary and sluggish in body, feeling that worldly body and actions are meaningless, and also settling the motionless body of Nirvana into tranquility. How much these should be done depends on the individual, until they reach their respective measure. The measure is when, even if a executioner appears to kill the actions of the body, there is no attachment to the body and no fear in the mind. Furthermore, for the very best, it is three, six, and nine days. For the intermediate, repeat it twice. For the worst, after the third time, it should be understood that settling into tranquility should also correspond to this. The necessity for this is: to reverse attachment to the body, to purify obscurations, to pacify obstacles and thereby accomplish the task, to separate the excellent body from the coarse, and when approaching Nirvana, not to fall into the three realms, and the body to be liberated into the Nirmāṇakāya (emanation body). Next is the second step, separating speech from the coarse: Again, for several days, various sounds will come from the mouth, various mantras, various deluded words, shameful words, 'grab', 'kill', 'hit' and so on, and the sounds of various animals. In short, all forms related to speech that exist in samsara will appear. If this is done while awake, then the speech will become as hard as a rock, all words will become untrue, and no matter what others say, there will be no happiness or unhappiness, which is the sign of separating the coarse. Then, one should remain silent, like a mute. The duration is the same as before. The necessity for this is: to reverse attachment to speech, to purify obscurations, to accomplish the task, to approach Nirvana, not to fall into deluded speech, and speech to be liberated into the Sambhogakāya (enjoyment body). Next is separating mind from the coarse: Measure the various thoughts that arise in the mind. Whether it is thoughts of business, thoughts of relatives and friends, thoughts of faith, thoughts of enemies, deluded thoughts, afflictions such as desire, visualizing deities, generating mandalas, thoughts of various Dharmas, fearful and terrible thoughts, excitement and joy, etc., the arising of these thoughts should be done day and night. In this way, develop disgust for thoughts, feeling that meaningless thoughts are useless, cut off the flow of mind, and abide in a state of non-thought. In this way, develop disgust for all forms of the samsaric mind, and if one is able to master the state of non-thought, that is the measure of separating the coarse. The duration is the same as before. The necessity for this is: to reverse attachment to mind, to purify sins, to accomplish the task of mind, to approach Nirvana, not to generate delusion, and the necessity for mind to be purified into the Dharmakāya (truth body). Like this, body, speech, and mind --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one separates from the body, speech, and mind of samsara through conduct, then when encountering the immovable body of nirvana, unspeakable speech, and non-conceptual mind, how should one act during meditation sessions? As it says in 'Utter Simplicity': 'Conduct itself is the time of completion, for the sake of abandoning coarse habitual patterns. Physical conduct includes prostrations, circumambulation, mudras, and entering the Dharma. Meditative speech includes mantras, collections of letters, and offerings and praises. Likewise, for the mind, there are various meditations for purifying coarse habitual patterns.' Therefore, one should separate from samsara, see nirvana, and combine the two into one taste. Some fortunate ones encounter the appearance of exhaustion in that very moment and are liberated. Therefore, this preliminary practice is very profound. It is said that even in the moment of directly experiencing awareness, if attachment and thoughts arise regarding the body, speech, and mind of samsara, one should act accordingly. Now, for those who cannot enter into actual meditation but have faith, merely show them how to settle, understand the meaning of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana, and teach it. For those holy beings who are separate from the body and speech of samsara, it is permissible not to do even that. The teaching on distinguishing between samsara and nirvana, the seventh section. Next, the teaching on bodily posture and gaze, the eighth section. Next, it is said that the empowerment of 'Utter Simplicity' should be given. As it says: 'Next, the wise should perform the ritual of settling for three days. If one has not practiced beforehand, then one should practice the preliminaries of guiding the mind.' Therefore, if it has not been shown before, at this time, in order to realize that everything is mind itself, and to realize the great freedom from elaboration, one should train the mind. Next, through the empowerment of 'Utter Simplicity,' one should enter the mandala of emptiness and bestow empowerment and prophecy. Next, one should focus on the key points of the body, first valuing the establishment of the elephant's posture. Like an elephant, one lies face down, with both elbows planted on the ground, using the palms to lift the chin, knees close to the chest, lifting the neck, and tilting it slightly backward. The gaze is to look upwards with unmoving, wide-open eyes. If one does not focus on the key points with the posture of a hermit, the body will not be coordinated. The posture of a hermit is to sit squatting, with both ankles aligned, knees close to the abdomen, the abdomen slightly touching the spine, and both elbows planted on the knees. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
