Through the profound pith instructions, for those of middling faculties, the introduction to the nature of mind is done as follows: First, the lama should ask: 'Mind' and 'awareness', which came first? One should introduce them as being inseparable. The lama then asks: For example, earth, stones, vegetation, water, etc., all have a source; medicine, jewels, people, and all sentient beings have a source. Likewise, your own nature of mind, from where does it arise—east, south, west, north, above, below, inside a mountain, in a crack in a rock, etc.? One should make them thoroughly investigate. Then, the lama introduces it like this: First, mind has no source; it arises from the state of clarity and emptiness being inseparable. The emptiness of having no source is not annihilation. The lama should again ask like this: For example, external elements and rainbows also have colors; vegetation, forests, crops, silk, clothes, etc., also have colors. Likewise, mountains, earth, castles, jewels, etc., also have colors and shapes. Similarly, your own nature of mind, does it have colors and shapes? One should thoroughly determine this. Then, one introduces that conventionally, there are colors and shapes; but ultimately, no colors and shapes are established. So, it is not an annihilation emptiness, but awareness, clarity, and emptiness inseparable, the nature of reality. The lama should again ask like this: For example, vegetation, forests, mountains, stones, water, castles, people, etc., all have length, thickness, size. Likewise, your own nature of mind, does it have length, thickness, size? One should thoroughly determine this. So, although conventionally there is length, thickness, size, ultimately, one should introduce it as emptiness inseparable. The lama should again ask like this: For example, birds in the sky, insects on the earth, ants, sentient beings in the water, wild animals in empty valleys, cattle, sheep, etc., all sentient beings have a place to stay and a place to sleep. Likewise, where does your own nature of mind reside? One should thoroughly determine this. If one says it resides nowhere, then by stabbing the body with a knife, etc.; if one says it resides in the body, then ask where in the body it resides? If one says it mainly resides in the heart of the body, or that there is no place in the body from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet that it does not pervade, then conventionally it can be said to reside in the body. But ultimately, it is not an annihilation emptiness that resides nowhere, but it does not reside anywhere; it is awareness, clarity, and emptiness inseparable. One knows from the lama's mouth that there are two reasons why the mind does not reside in the body. Samaya! Gya Gya Gya! Kha Tham! Now is the introduction to the six faculties... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guidance: The lama asks the disciple thus: 'Hearing sounds with the ear, is it the ear that hears or the mind that hears?' If you say it is the mind that hears, then even a deaf person has a mind and should be able to hear. If you say it is the ear that hears, then even a wooden puppet has ears and should be able to hear, right?' If you say, 'It is because the interdependent origination of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena is complete that hearing occurs,' then that is recognition. 'Seeing forms with the eye, is it the eye that sees or the mind that sees?' If you say it is the mind that sees, then even a blind person has a mind and should be able to see. If you say it is the eye that sees, then even a wooden puppet has eyes and should be able to see, right?' If you say, 'It is because the interdependent origination of conventional truth and ultimate truth is complete that seeing occurs,' then that is recognition. 'Smelling odors with the nose, is it the nose that smells or the mind that smells?' If you say it is the nose that smells, then even a corpse has a nose and should be able to smell, right? If you say it is the mind that smells, then if you block your own nose, can you still smell?' If you say, 'It is because the interdependent origination of skillful means and wisdom is complete that smelling occurs,' then that is recognition. 'Tasting flavors with the tongue, is it the tongue that tastes or the mind that tastes?' If you say it is the tongue that tastes, then even a corpse has a tongue and should be able to taste, right? If you say it is the mind that tastes, then when you are asleep, if food is placed on your tongue, can you still taste it?' If you say, 'It is because the interdependent origination of conventional truth and ultimate truth is complete that tasting occurs,' then that is recognition. 'Feeling the smoothness and roughness with the body, is it the body that feels or the mind that feels?' If you say it is the body that feels, then even a corpse has a body and should be able to feel, right? If you say it is the mind that feels, then even a wandering consciousness can feel. If you say, 'Until the physical body and consciousness are separated, the body and mind feel without distinction,' then that is recognition. Now, the arising of body and mind, does it arise in the mind or in the body?' If it arises in the body, then it should also arise in a corpse. If it arises in the mind, then does it pervade everything?' If you recognize that awareness is empty and clear, the nature of reality, then it pervades everything. 'Hearing sounds with the ear, is there a difference between hearing sounds of praise and sounds of blame?' If you say, 'There is a difference in the current appearance, but there is no difference in the ultimate nature of reality,' then that is recognition. 'Seeing forms with the eye, is there a difference between seeing a leper (mze pho) and a beautiful person?' If there is a difference when you have not understood conventional truth, but there is no difference when you have understood ultimate truth, the nature of mind free from elaboration,' then that is recognition. 'Smelling pleasant and unpleasant odors with the nose, is there a difference between them?' If there is a difference when you have not understood conventional truth, but there is no difference when you have understood ultimate truth, free from elaboration,' then that is recognition. 'In the realm of the tongue, is there a difference between good and bad tastes?' If there is a difference from the perspective of conventional delusion, but in the ultimate nature of mind, free from elaboration. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
