The frog's back on the tip of an arrow, cinnabar, etc., originate from earth and stone. In short, it is necessary to compound poisons and non-purgative herbs, earth and stone medicines. Salts are mentioned in the scriptures, but they can damage the taste, and substances like ochre can damage the color. As for Saussurea costus, it seems that even the 'mad dogs' that represent the decaying parts and damage the color and smell are not discarded. Furthermore, the scriptures mention: the three whites (milk, yogurt, butter), the three sweets (sugar, honey, molasses), the five sets of five, the five types of feces, the five types of alcohol, the five types of water, the five types of milk. A complete, clean corpse, including the viscera, blood, bones, skin, hair, nails, legs, and marrow. Animals with faces like the Shang Shang monkey, animals with wings like peacocks and vultures, ferocious beasts like lions, tigers, and leopards, animals with cloven hooves like elephants and yaks, animals with round hooves like horses, mules, and donkeys, aquatic animals like fish and otters, and animals that burrow into the earth like mice—their meat and blood. Heart marrow, conch shells, cowrie shells, dragon bones, and various other bones. Tongues, such as the tongues of birds that have not yet made a sound. Powders of various grains, etc., it is said that each should be mixed with a thousand parts, so however one collects them, whether accepting or rejecting, is permissible. However, nowadays, few can properly bless them with the power of samadhi (concentration), so in this stage of mere intentional accomplishment, for herbs, one should cleanly compound a complete collection of very many basic herbal ingredients, the five sets of five, the three whites and three sweets, fruits, grain powders, earth and stone medicines, etc., that are suitable and appropriate. The others can be replaced with feces. This practice is good because it prevents faults from arising in minds that are coarse and full of doubt. However, later Dharma medicines also mixed in whatever blessings could be found, compounding them into collections of blessings, which should not be done. One should mix the powders of the medicines just mentioned with water, alcohol, and milk, like freshly made nectar pills. The Dharma medicines practiced by the unfabricated treasures, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the eight vidyadharas (holders of knowledge), the twenty-five disciples, etc., and the Dharma medicines compounded in a qualified manner by the unbroken lineage masters, should be soaked in the essence of alcohol and stirred together. Add saffron and red sandalwood powder, etc., as much as possible, to create a good color that is yellow or reddish-brown, and make it into a dry powder. When practicing the teachings of the Karmapas and other medicines, it is best to practice if possible. If not, because one must first generate oneself as the deity, one can clearly understand the essential points of the nectar blessing in the scriptures and single-mindedly practice reciting millions of mantras, etc. This is medicine practice.
