Therefore, as is customary, first, in order to purify the obscurations of the body and make it suitable as a vessel for the vase empowerment, and in order to examine external omens, the enclosure where the tooth-stick is discarded is prepared as a square mandala, smeared with ballast, etc., or an eight-petaled lotus is drawn and a cluster of flowers is placed. Since the material for the tooth-stick, such as the Ashvattha tree, is not found in Tibet, a straight tree with milk is used, of moderate thickness, without creatures and without cracks, with the top and bottom equal, measuring twelve fingers, with three corners at the end. It is washed with fragrant water, fumigated with incense, and a garland of flowers and a red thread are tied to the top, blessed with mantra. The teacher faces north, shows the flower to the student's hand, and then gives it. The student faces east or north, grasps the essence of space with the tooth-stick, and at the same time rubs the root of the tooth, and with a strong desire to vomit out the obscurations of the body, such as eating meat, and with a strong desire to examine the signs of accomplishment, while repeating the mantra, looks upwards and throws it into the enclosure in front without hesitation. The omen is examined: if the tip falls facing east, north, west, south, up, or down, then in sequence, pacifying, increasing, powerful, forceful, vidyadhara, and subterranean accomplishments will be achieved. If it falls outside, it is said that accomplishment will not be obtained. Second, in order to purify the obscurations of speech and make it a suitable vessel for the secret empowerment, and as a preliminary for examining internal omens, for the sake of clarifying dreams, the blessed conch water is given three times to be drunk. The remaining water is thrown backwards from the left shoulder, and it is contemplated that the impurities of speech are purified. Third, in order to purify the obscurations of mind and make it a suitable vessel for the wisdom empowerment, and in order to prevent obstacles to dreams, a five-colored thread (representing the five wisdoms) or the color of the activity goddess (representing the three folds of body, speech, and mind) is rolled up, tied with a vajra knot, and then fumigated and blessed with mantra, in order to protect the white and red elements, it is tied on the left arm of a man and the right arm of a woman. In order to protect against obstacles of day and night or outer and inner, it is tied twice in sequence, and touched in the form of a vajra cross, it is contemplated that the body is covered with vajra armor in the manner of melting. Fourth, in order to purify the obscurations of equilibrium and make it a suitable vessel for the fourth empowerment, and in order to prevent dreams from being confused, a bunch of auspicious kusha grass is given as a mat and a single pillow, blessed with mantra, to the palms or left and right hands.

The earth protects from demonic disturbances and clearly reveals auspicious and inauspicious dreams. Therefore, the students should also do the same tonight, lying down like a lion, with their heads facing the direction of the deities and gurus. If they see auspicious signs in their dreams, it is good, and they should again generate devout faith in the gurus and deities. If they see inauspicious signs, they should not be lazy, but should pacify them through practices such as Tsok offerings and reciting the Vajrasattva mantra, especially by meditating on the meaning of selflessness to avert them. After accomplishing the four substances, to prevent regression, generate joy by teaching the profound Dharma. Dedicate the merit and send the students back to their respective places. If the guru has previously placed the initiation deity there, then invite it here, make offerings, and perform the concluding rituals of self-generation. The mandala and student initiation, even if relying on paintings, should be done well, because it is said that if one gives initiation to a student without prior initiation of the deity, it will become a root downfall. Fourth, the activities of the mandala are divided into two parts. First, the basis for accomplishment must be assembled. The mandala depends on the faculties of the recipients: for those with superior faculties, a sand mandala; for those with intermediate faculties, a painted mandala; and for those with inferior faculties, a torma mandala. Nowadays, although teachers and students with sharp faculties are rare, they deceive themselves and others with easy practices, let alone ripening their minds. Most seem to follow bad examples that violate the precepts and cause root downfalls, so one should not blindly follow, but should adapt to the capacities of both teacher and student. In general, the limbs of the deity and mandala rituals should not be diminished, and one should choose practices that are beneficial and have few faults. Beginners should take up whatever they can accomplish. For large mandalas and elaborate practices, the sand mandala should be constructed according to the respective texts. For those who cannot accomplish that, and for ordinary initiations, a standard painted mandala should be prepared in advance and displayed on a platform. If it is not available, then in this early translation tradition, there is no prohibition against using a torma mandala, but it should not be done haphazardly. Pure white grains moistened with fragrant water, or for practices that primarily emphasize wrathful activities, black grains moistened with blood and alcohol, should be arranged to partially represent the forms of the main deity and retinue. In the center of the mandala, place a vase filled with all the sacred substances on a small throne, and in the four directions, place the implements of wisdom, such as crowns. If possible, also place the implements for self-entry on the corner of the platform, to be given to each student or the main practitioner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
