They suffer intensely and for a long time from being bound, beaten, and the fear of being killed, as well as fleeing in great terror without any refuge. Regarding the differences in lifespan, the *Ratnakuta Sutra* says: 'Five hundred months and days.' This means that one human month is counted as one night, making the lifespan five hundred years. The *Friendly Letter* says: 'Or five thousand or ten thousand, there are also those who do not die.' Thus, some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, while others have a lifespan of ten thousand years.' The cause of such suffering is stinginess and obstruction, so one must be diligent and careful. Third, contemplating the suffering of animals: This is divided into two categories: general and scattered. The general category refers to those who live in the great ocean. Because they have no refuge or place of protection, they are driven by the waves and wander aimlessly. They devour each other, with the large ones swallowing the small ones, and the small ones burrowing into the bodies of the large ones to eat them. The nagas are burned daily by sand and devoured by garudas, and so on. They constantly live in fear of enemies, and their suffering is unbearable. The scattered category refers to those who live in the realms of gods and humans. Those who are not owned by humans are constantly tormented by the fear of enemies, and their minds have no peace. They are eaten by birds and wild animals, or killed arbitrarily by humans. Those who are owned are subjected to plucking of their fur, piercing of their noses, beating and driving, and the torment of heavy burdens. They are killed for their meat, blood, skin, and bones. Because of their foolishness and ignorance, they do not know what to do and what not to do, and therefore they are confused and suffer. In addition, they suffer from hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and so on, which are similar to the suffering of hells and pretas. The *Friendly Letter* says: 'In the animal realm, they experience various unbearable sufferings such as killing, binding, and beating. Those who abandon the virtues of peace and liberation devour each other, which is extremely terrifying. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and skin. Others are driven by force, beaten with feet, hands, whips, and hooks.' Regarding lifespan: 'The lifespan of animals is extremely long, lasting for eons.' This means that long-lived animals can live for an eon, while the lifespan of short-lived animals is uncertain. Thus, contemplate the suffering of the lower realms. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, it is difficult to endure even putting a finger in the fire for a moment, or staying naked in an ice cave in the cold winter, or going without food and drink for days, or even being bitten by mosquitoes and lice. How, then, can one endure the suffering of beings in hell, the preta realm, and the animal realm? Now, based on one's own experience, one should be motivated by intense fear, renunciation, and make this precious human life meaningful. Second, contemplate the faults of the higher realms: By accumulating virtuous actions corresponding to merit, whether small, medium, or large, one is born as a human, a desire realm god, or a god in the higher realms, enjoying the happiness of each respective state. Therefore, if one thinks that there is no happiness in the lower realms and strives to attain the higher realms, it is important to realize that all of samsara is of the nature of suffering and is without essence. Not only are the lower realms full of suffering, but the higher realms are also of the nature of suffering. One should contemplate the suffering of humans, the suffering of asuras, and the suffering of gods. First, contemplate the suffering of humans: Generally, at the time of birth, one must stay for months in the narrow, dark, foul-smelling womb, where the changes of hot and cold are unbearable. Then, one is pulled out headfirst from the birth canal, as if being pulled from an eye socket, or as if being whipped by thorns, and when one is picked up, it is like a bird being snatched by an eagle, full of suffering. Then, at the time of aging, the complexion fades, the body becomes unsightly, appearing bluish-black or ashen-white, and the hair turns white. As the radiance and form of the organs deteriorate, the teeth fall out. The body becomes hunched, the limbs crooked, the flesh withers, the skin loosens, and the face is covered with wrinkles. Strength diminishes, making it difficult to stand, walking becomes unsteady, sitting becomes wobbly, and speech becomes slurred. The senses weaken, vision becomes blurred, and hearing declines. The ability to enjoy also diminishes, eating too little leads to hunger, and eating too much leads to indigestion, making one powerless over desires and unwelcome by others. Furthermore, due to past karma or sudden causes, the four elements become imbalanced, causing illness to arise, pain to increase, and the body to weaken. One cannot freely enjoy desired food, sleep, and so on, and one must rely on disliked medicines and treatments, constantly fearing death, with endless suffering. At the time of death, no matter what medicines or treatments are used, they are of no avail, and one must abandon all the wealth, power, companions, and even the cherished body that one has strived to acquire, dying with intense suffering. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
