Having just been chopped into pieces, they are revived as soon as they are lifted up. And so on, having escaped from these, they go to the forest of sword leaves. There, as they sit in the shade, the wind of karma blows, and swords fall like rain, cutting their bodies, and as they fall, packs of dogs swarm and devour them. Having escaped from that, they are chased by many fierce wild animals, and seeing a forest of iron trees—silk-cotton trees, they flee there and climb up and down. However, sharp thorns, sixteen fingers in length, pierce their bodies upwards and downwards like a sieve, and crows and other birds with iron beaks peck at their eyes and tear at their flesh, thus terrifying them. Having escaped from that, they are tormented by heat, and seeing a river flowing, they run towards it, only to fall into the river of transformation, which is extremely hot. As they sink to the bottom, their flesh and bones separate, leaving only white bones. When they rise to the surface, their flesh regrows, and then they sink again. Wanting to escape, but on both banks, hell guardians holding weapons do not allow them to escape. Sometimes, they pull them out with iron hooks, place them face up, and ask them what they want. They reply, 'We know nothing, we see nothing, but we are hungry and thirsty.' Then, they suffer torments such as being poured burning molten iron and boiling molten copper into their mouths. These, the razor mountain, the forest of sword leaves, and the silk-cotton trees, can be grouped together as one type, the four principal sufferings of the surrounding hells. For these sufferings, although the lifespan is not explicitly stated, they must each remain for hundreds or even thousands of years, so the intensity and duration of the suffering are long. The fourth is the temporary suffering of the surrounding hells. Location: located near the principal hells, on the edge of the ocean, underground, and in uncertain places such as water on the surface of the earth. Sufferings include being burned by fire, being frozen and cracked, being killed and devoured by executioners, and so on; or being happy during the day and suffering at night, or vice versa, and the lifespan is also uncertain, as described in the 'Tale of the Rice Seedling' and the 'Tale of the Guarded Sangha.' Therefore, the cause of being born in these places is that, as will be explained, much negative karma has been accumulated in the past, and is still being accumulated now. If there is only a breath's time between this life and hell, then one should not remain at ease. Shantideva said: 'Having created the karma of hell, why can one still dwell here in happiness?' The 'Letter to a Friend' also says: 'A sinner, even within the space of a breath, may fall into hell, having heard of the immeasurable sufferings of hell, how can one be so fearless like a stone?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is the nature of the king! Seeing or hearing the depiction of hell, remembering, reading, or shaping the image of hell, will generate fear. What more to say about personally experiencing the unbearable ripening of karma? ' Thus it is said. 'If the suffering experienced by being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in one day here, then, compared to the small suffering of hell, it is not even a shadow, let alone bearable.' Thus it is said. The cause of such suffering is entirely one's own misdeeds, so one must strive to abandon them. Second, contemplate the suffering of pretas (hungry ghosts): Most are located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa (earth). Scattered pretas are spread throughout the earth, mountains, and all places. The Sutra of Mindfulness states that there are thirty-six types of pretas, which can be summarized into three types: those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations of food and drink. Pretas with external obscurations: Afflicted by hunger and thirst, their bodies are withered and emaciated, their throats and limbs are thin, and their hair is disheveled. They run around everywhere in search of food but find nothing. Even if they see piles of food, rivers, and fruit trees from afar, when they get there, the food disappears without a trace, the rivers dry up or turn into pus and blood, and the fruit trees become barren, dry stumps. Even if this does not happen, there are many armed men blocking and guarding them, and so on, there is such suffering. Pretas with internal obscurations: Some pretas have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as large as mountains, and they are afflicted by hunger. They do not even have the ability to seek a little bit of impurity. ' Thus it is said, even if they find food, they cannot put it in their mouths, and even if they do, the food will fall into their cheeks. Even if they drink water, their mouths will be dried up by poison, and even if they barely swallow a little, it cannot pass through their throats, and even if it passes through their throats, their stomachs cannot be filled, and so on, they suffer because they cannot eat or drink. Pretas with obscurations of food and drink: Whatever food they eat turns into burning flames, burning their internal organs, etc. They can only eat unclean and foul-smelling feces, urine, pus, blood, mucus, etc., as well as poisons, sparks, and other unpleasant and painful things. In short, all these pretas constantly suffer unbearable hunger and thirst. Without clothes to cover their bodies, they are afflicted by heat and cold, scorched by the summer sun, and chilled by the winter cold. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
