The Great Treasure of the Dharma, TD1560, A Teaching on the Common Preliminaries, Called 'The Jewel Staircase'. General Branch, Preliminaries. Reflecting on the Difficulty of Finding Leisure and Opportunity. The Great Treasure of the Dharma, TD1560, A Teaching on the Common Preliminaries, Called 'The Jewel Staircase'. Om Svasti! A Teaching on the Common Preliminaries, Called 'The Jewel Staircase'. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! From the sphere of great bliss and peace, unmoving, Yet with endless displays of various magical dances, Bestowing all things beneficial and happy through your activity, I pay homage to the Lama, the essence of the Three Jewels. From the perilous precipice of the city of existence, To the supreme city of liberation and freedom, For the fortunate to swiftly and easily enter, the precious Staircase, I will clarify the stages of the path. In general, the mind-essence of all sentient beings has been enlightened from the very beginning. To manifest this, there are two approaches: relying on the path of gradual learning through study and reflection for those of lesser intellect, and entering through the path of sudden breakthrough with devotion for those of sharp intellect. Both of these approaches exist in both the Sutra and Tantra teachings. According to the first approach, one must rely on the three non-attachments to generate the mind of pursuing the three aims. First, by contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity and the impermanence of life, one is freed from attachment to this life and genuinely generates the mind of pursuing the happiness of higher realms in the future. Second, by contemplating the suffering of samsara and the law of karma, one is freed from attachment to samsara and genuinely generates the mind of definitely seeking one's own path to liberation. Third, by cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, one is freed from attachment to self-interest and genuinely generates the mind of wanting to attain enlightenment for the sake of others. If one does not develop these three types of minds of the three types of persons, then no matter how much one meditates on deities or recites mantras, there is no reliable refuge to go to. Therefore, one should understand how to practice in the following order: contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, contemplating death and impermanence, contemplating the faults of samsara, and contemplating the law of karma. The first of these is to identify leisure and opportunity, how difficult it is to find, and how great its meaning is. The first of these three is: difficult to endure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We must strive to avoid being reborn in this cycle of suffering. And the basis for achieving this is precisely this leisure and fortune body. Because other than this time, it is extremely difficult to obtain. Therefore, we must resolve to gain the essence in this life no matter what. Regarding this, the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses says: 'Hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, and those with wrong views, those devoid of Buddhas, and the mute—these are the eight unfree states.' Thus, if reborn in the three lower realms, suffering is intense and the physical basis is extremely poor, so there is no opportunity for Dharma. The gods of the desire realm are distracted by attachment to desirable objects and have little renunciation. Most of the gods of the form and formless realms are constantly intoxicated by samadhi, so there is no opportunity for Dharma. Being born in a world where Buddhas have not appeared, or in a remote barbarian land where the Dharma has not spread even if a Buddha has appeared, or being born in a place where the Dharma has spread but holding wrong views that deny past and future lives, karma and its effects, and the Three Jewels, and becoming foolish and mute, not understanding what to accept and reject, and being born without the thought of engaging or disengaging—these are the eight unfree states. Among these, the three lower realms and the long-lived gods are non-human unfree states, and the other four are human unfree states. It is also said that the unfree god is identified with the god of non-perception. Thus, being free from the eight unfree states is leisure and fortune. As the Akashagarbha Sutra says: 'Bodhisattva Akashagarbha asked: Bhagavan, how should leisure and fortune be viewed? The Buddha replied: The mind wandering due to various thoughts is called busyness. The mind pacified from various thoughts and abiding in its own nature is called leisure and fortune.' And as the Compendium says: 'Abandoning the eight unfree states, one always obtains leisure and fortune.' The five personal fortunes among the ten fortunes are: 'Being human, born in the central land, having complete faculties, not having reversed karma, and having faith in the place of faith.' That is, I have obtained a general human body, especially born in the central land where the Dharma is flourishing. Having complete faculties such as the five senses, I can know what to accept and reject. Not having committed or caused others to commit the five heinous crimes. Having faith in the Vinaya, the source of all white dharmas of the world and beyond, that is, having faith in the Buddha's teachings. Just possessing these. These five are gathered by oneself and are conducive to practicing the Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
