Therefore, it is called 'self-endowment'. The leisure that is free from the eight unfree states and the five self-endowments are actually one key point. The five other-endowments are: 'Buddha appeared, He taught the Dharma, the teachings remain, many follow them, and others cherish compassion.' This means that the Buddha appeared in the world, taught the sacred Dharma, his teachings remain without decaying, there are many who follow the Dharma, and there are many who provide food, clothing, and other necessities to those who practice the Dharma with compassion. Another explanation is that 'compassion' refers to the spiritual teacher guiding people towards the Dharma with compassion. These five belong to the continuum of others and are conducive to practicing the Dharma, hence they are called 'other-endowments'. Moreover, the sutra says: 'Endowment means understanding the nature of the mind, it is the meaning of correct wisdom.' Therefore, leisure is the essence, and endowment is its special quality. Like this, it is extremely difficult to obtain a human body with eighteen leisures and endowments, so now one should single-mindedly strive to practice the Dharma. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Having obtained such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue, there is no greater self-deception, nor is there greater foolishness than this.' Secondly, explaining how difficult it is to obtain this human body: Among sentient beings, the beings of the three lower realms are very numerous, like the dust of the great earth, boundless. The beings of the higher realms are very few, like the dust on a fingernail. Among the three lower realms, the animal realm is the least, and most of the animal realm lives in the ocean, in inconceivable numbers. Even scattered, they fill the earth, mountains, rivers, and the sky. Compared to this, the number of gods and humans is negligible. Moreover, in general, the number of humans is small, especially the people of Jambudvipa are fewer, and especially those with a Dharma-abiding human body are even rarer. The reason for this scarcity is that among sentient beings, those who commit evil deeds are very numerous, boundless, while those who do good deeds are very few. Moreover, among those who do good, those who can keep the precepts and thus obtain a human body are even rarer, so it is difficult to obtain a human body. As it is said in the *Madhyamakavatara*: 'The cause of higher rebirth is none other than discipline.' It clearly points out that the cause of higher rebirth is discipline alone. Regarding the analogy of the scarcity of discipline, Nagarjuna said: 'Like a yoke in the ocean meeting a hole, and a blind turtle encountering it with difficulty.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the scriptures say, 'Even if reborn as an animal, obtaining a human body is extremely difficult, O King! By practicing the true Dharma, you will obtain the corresponding result.' This illustrates that, in general, obtaining a human body is very difficult, and especially obtaining such a human body capable of practicing Dharma is the result of accumulating much merit. Therefore, now that we have obtained this difficult-to-obtain and perfect human body, we must, for the sake of lasting happiness, strive to practice pure Dharma in every way!' Think in this way. Third, contemplate the greatness of the gain: If you wonder what is the need to have obtained such a difficult to obtain human body, then the benefits are extremely great. Temporarily, one can easily achieve the happiness of the higher realms from birth to birth, as well as all the perfect things such as body and possessions. Moreover, one can also achieve the Nirvana of the lower vehicle and the unsurpassed Bodhi. If one does not obtain this, let alone liberation, there is no way to even achieve the happiness of samsara. Therefore, if one does not now obtain the essence from leisure and endowment, it is like returning empty-handed from a treasure island, and the loss is extremely great. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Relying on the boat of a human body, one can cross the great river of suffering. This boat is difficult to find again, O foolish one, do not sleep!' Like this, once you have obtained the support that can accomplish special wishes, do not let it go to waste. Now, in any case, strive single-mindedly to practice the holy Dharma!' Generate such thoughts from the depths of your heart, and it is important not to let leisure and endowment become meaningless. Contemplating Impermanence of Death Second, contemplating the impermanence of death: Although everyone thinks that they will eventually die, until the moment of death they still hope that they will not die. Obscured by this evil thought, they indulge in the distractions of this life, postpone the practice for the next life, and become lazy, so it is necessary to practice impermanence. This includes three aspects: contemplating that one will certainly die, that the time of death is uncertain, and that nothing can help one at the time of death. First, contemplating that one will certainly die: Since one has already obtained the leisure and endowment of a human body, it would be good if one did not die, but in reality there is no guarantee of permanence. No matter what kind of body one obtains, or what kind of environment one relies on, one cannot escape death. All beings in the past, present, and future cannot avoid death. In short, from the time we were born until today, enemies... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
