How many beings in the intermediate state die? What assurance do I have that I will not die? The sutra says: 'However many beings have come and will come to be, all will leave this body and go. The wise should realize that all of this will perish, and should definitely abide in the Dharma and practice diligently.' As the 'Horse Song' says: 'On earth or in the heavens, have you ever seen or heard of anyone who was born and did not die? Or do you have doubts about this?' No matter where you go, you cannot escape death. There is no place where death cannot reach, whether in the sky, in the depths of the ocean, or in caves in the mountains.' As the scriptures say, in general, no one can transcend death. Even if someone can live a long life, every year, every month, every day, every meal, every moment brings them closer to death. The time that has passed is gone, and the time remaining is constantly decreasing. As the 'Great Play Sutra' says: 'The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the life of beings flows like a waterfall from a mountain, the life of beings is as fleeting as lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like a waterfall from a mountain.' As the 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way' says: 'Day and night do not stop, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is no increase from elsewhere, how can I not die?' Therefore, in the beginning, when young, one does not practice the Dharma because one has not realized its importance. In the end, when old, even if one tries to practice the Dharma, one's body and mind are too weak to make progress. Half of the time in between is spent sleeping. Furthermore, one is influenced by various meaningless distractions, such as wandering around, so the opportunity to practice the Dharma is very brief. Therefore, we should recognize that the perfections and deceptions of this life are like the pleasure of a single dream, and strive diligently to practice the sacred Dharma. Secondly, contemplate that there is no certainty when death will come. Even though one will eventually die, if one thinks that one will not die for the time being, why be in a hurry? Generally speaking, except for unpleasant sounds, there is no certainty about the lifespan of other beings. In particular, the lifespan of beings in Jambudvipa is very uncertain. In the beginning, lifespans could reach countless years, but eventually they will have to be shortened to ten years. Even now, no one, young or old, can be certain when they will die. As the 'Treasury of Knowledge' says: 'In this continent, lifespan is uncertain, the longest is immeasurable years, the shortest is ten years.' If, due to good deeds in the past, one can live to sixty or seventy years, but starting from today,... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how much longer I will live. The past is gone, and it's impossible to predict how much longer I can live. Maybe only thirty or forty years are left. In any case, considering the beings I have seen and heard dying suddenly, we are no exception. As the Omniscient Dharma Lord (Kunkyen Chöjé, an honorific for a respected master) said: 'This life is like an impermanent clay pot, and it is uncertain which will come first, the next life or tomorrow, so from today onwards, accumulate the sacred Dharma.' As he said, we do not know which will come first, tomorrow or our next life, so we must completely sever all attachments to this life. As Nagarjuna said: 'The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, and the seven suns, burned to ashes, these sentient beings will not even turn into ashes, let alone extremely fragile humans?' As he said, the body is as fragile as a water bubble, and the breath is like autumn mist, which may disappear at any time. The mind that has not gained autonomy has nowhere to go. As it is said: 'It is not right to live comfortably thinking that one will not die today.' Nagarjuna also said: 'The causes of death are many, but the causes of survival are few. Even those causes of survival are causes of death. Therefore, constantly accumulate the Dharma.' As he said, external causes, such as harm caused by humans, animals, demons, etc., and natural disasters such as fire, water, and cliffs. The internal body has four hundred and four kinds of diseases, etc. In short, there is no cause of death that will not occur. Relying on food, clothing, and medicine, etc., as causes of survival, is not without the possibility of becoming causes of death. Therefore, in the midst of the causes of death as violent as a blizzard, we should constantly contemplate that we may die at any time. As the holy one said: 'In a moment of carelessness, the Lord of Death, the demon, will seize you. Start practicing now, Dingriwa (name of a master)!' Third, thinking that nothing but the Dharma can help at the time of death. When the moment of death comes, even if one has accumulated a lot of wealth, one cannot take it away, and even the flesh and bones that one was born with must be left behind. Even if surrounded by beloved relatives, friends, and servants, one cannot take them along. Even if one has built a strong house, one cannot continue to live in it. Separated from all the perfections of this life, one goes involuntarily to an unknown direction. Food, wealth, power, wisdom, mantras, and dependent origination cannot prevent death. As the sutra says: 'Great king, disease destroys health,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
