I am coming! Old age destroys youth, I am coming! Decay destroys prosperity, I am coming! Death destroys life. To quickly escape from these, or to avert them with wealth, possessions, mantras, and medicines, is not easy. As Shantideva said, 'What use are relatives to one seized by the Lord of Death? What use are friends?' So, if not following these, what should one follow? One should follow the two, virtuous and non-virtuous, actions accumulated by oneself. As the 'King's Admonition Sutra' says, 'When a king, approached by time, departs, enjoyments, friends, and relatives do not follow. Wherever beings go from wherever, karma follows like a shadow.' Therefore, one should be certain that all changes in the outer world and inner beings are signs showing impermanence to oneself. All actions in this life are endless and of little significance. Only the Dharma continuously benefits one at the time of death. It is crucial to strive in the Dharma right now. As Nagarjuna said, 'If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, one should abandon all efforts to stop these things and strive to ensure that there is no rebirth. There is nothing more important than that.' As the holy one said, 'It is impossible to go to the Dharma after finishing worldly affairs. When you have the thought, go practice, Dingriwa!' Reflecting on the Faults of Samsara Third, reflecting on the faults of samsara is divided into three parts: reflecting on the suffering of the three lower realms, reflecting on the suffering of the higher realms, and generally reflecting on the nature of the three sufferings. First, reflecting on the suffering of the three lower realms: Since it is certain that one will die, there is no power to remain in this life. After death, one cannot just end there; one must take rebirth again. The place of rebirth is none other than the good realms and the bad realms. Due to the pull of karma, we are not independent. I have accumulated so many non-virtuous actions; if I am born in a lower realm, what kind of suffering will I experience? One should think like this. As the venerable Nagarjuna said, 'One should remember the extremely hot and cold suffering of one day in hell. One should remember the suffering of the pretas, emaciated by hunger and thirst. One should observe and remember the suffering of animals, full of ignorance. One should abandon the causes of these sufferings and practice the causes of happiness.' First, reflecting on the suffering of hell is divided into four parts: First, reflecting on the suffering of the hot hells. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thinking about the suffering of the hot hells: Among them, the difference in location is that the ground is made of burning iron, either valleys or ravines. Flames about a cubit high are constantly burning, and molten copper and corrosive liquids flow. The trees of burning iron are filled with burning flames. It is filled with fierce birds and beasts, and unruly hell guardians and executioners. It is surrounded by walls of burning iron and pits of fire. It is hotter than the fire at the end of a kalpa. Moreover, it is said that each lower level is four times hotter. In that place, the intermediate beings are driven by rain and wind, appearing as cold, and seeing the place of the hot hells. Thinking it is warm, they run there out of desire, and upon entering, they take birth as if waking from a dream. Moreover, because their minds are sharp and their bodies are soft and supple, they are less tolerant in both body and mind, so the suffering is even greater. The difference in suffering is: In the Reviving Hells, beings obtain various weapons in their hands due to karma. They attack each other with intense hatred, considering each other as enemies, and faint and fall down due to extreme suffering. At this time, a sound comes from the sky saying, 'May you be revived,' or a cold wind blows, and they are revived again, experiencing intense suffering as before, until their karma is exhausted. In the Black Line Hells, the hell guardians draw four or eight or many black lines on the bodies of beings, and then saw them apart with saws, or chop and cut them with axes and other tools. This suffering is endless. In the Crushing Hells, the bodies of beings are gathered together. The hell guardians put them into iron devices shaped like goats, sheep, tigers, lions, etc., and squeeze them, causing streams of blood to flow from all the pores. Or when they are gathered together, they are squeezed like sesame seeds with huge iron hammers. Or burning iron boulders fall like rain, striking and destroying them. In the Crying Hells, beings search for a place to stay out of fear, and see an iron house. As soon as they enter, the door closes and flames burn inside and out, burning them. They cry out for help but find no refuge. In the Great Crying Hells, similar to the previous ones, but the iron house has two layers, and they are burned as before, experiencing extremely intense suffering. In the Hot Hells, the bodies of beings are roasted like fish in many iron cauldrons filled with burning flames. A burning iron skewer is inserted from the anus and pulled out from the crown of the head, burning all the internal organs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 40-14-9b
