Flames erupt from their entire bodies, with fire spewing from every pore. They are thrown onto a scorching iron ground and beaten with burning iron hammers. The bodies of the extremely hot ones are pierced from the anus through the crown of the head and both shoulders with a burning three-pronged iron skewer, with fire erupting from every pore. Burning iron plates wrap around their bodies, and they are boiled like rice in a molten iron-copper cauldron until their flesh and blood are destroyed, leaving only skeletons. When they are spread on the iron ground and flesh and blood regrow, they are cooked again. For the beings in Avīci (无间, *Avīci*, avīci, uninterrupted) hell, intensely burning fire comes from all directions of the iron ground, burning their skin, flesh, sinews, bones, and even marrow. Their bodies burn like candle wicks, with no distinction between body and fire, only emitting groans, barely manifesting as sentient beings. They are boiled together with burning iron filings, and forced to climb up and down a great burning iron mountain. Their tongues are pulled out and stretched on a scorching iron ground, then hammered with nails. Their skin is peeled off, and they are laid supine on the scorching iron ground. Their mouths are pried open with tongs, and molten iron and copper are poured in, causing their mouths, throats, and all internal organs to burn, then flow out from their lower bodies. These sufferings are unbearable. Regarding the differences in lifespan, the *Abhidharmakośa* (俱舍论, *Abhidharmakośa*, abhidharmakośa, Treasury of Knowledge) states: 'Fifty human years, in the desire realm gods, one day of the lower ones, their lifespan is five hundred years, the upper two are doubled.' That is, from fifty human years to one day of the Four Great Kings. Calculated in this way, their lifespan is five hundred years. This is entirely equivalent to one day of the Reviving Hell. Five hundred years there is the lifespan of the Reviving Hell. The lower hells increase in years twofold, and the days also increase twofold, so the upper hells are four times the lower hells. Second, contemplating the suffering of the cold hells: The difference in location is that in the darkness without the light of the sun and moon, in valleys covered with snow and ice, where fierce winds and blizzards are extremely cold and pervasive. There, the sounds of body and speech correspond to the suffering of cold, with the lower hells being seven times colder than the upper hells. When such appearances arise, one sees the realm of the cold hells. Driven by craving, one rushes towards it and is reborn there. The distinctions in suffering are as follows: Those with blisters suffer as their bodies are covered with blisters due to the cold of wind and blizzards, causing them to shrink and suffer. Those with burst blisters suffer as the blisters burst due to extreme cold. Iron worms born from within tear at the skin with sharp beaks, and the oozing pus and blood also freeze, causing suffering. 'Achu' (藏文，梵文天城体，梵文罗马拟音，meaning: 'Achu') means uttering a faint moan, barely able to produce a slightly slurred wail. 'Kyi hud' (藏文，梵文天城体，梵文罗马拟音，meaning: 'Kyi hud') means being even colder than before, unable to produce a clear sound, only emitting a faint, trembling cry for help. 'So tham tham pa' (藏文，梵文天城体，梵文罗马拟音，meaning: 'So tham tham pa') means being extremely cold, unable to produce a sound, the body trembling, teeth chattering and clattering. Those split like উৎপལ་ utpala (藏文，梵文天城体，utpala，meaning: blue lotus) are even colder, their skin turning blue due to the force of the cold wind, splitting into five or six sections. Those split like a lotus പദ്മ padma (藏文，梵文天城体，padma，meaning: lotus) are even more severe than the blue ones, turning red and splitting into ten or more sections. The difference in lifespan is as follows: The Treasury of Knowledge states: 'A hundred years in a sesame field, Exhausted by removing one sesame seed, Is the lifespan of the blister hell. The lifespan of others is twenty times.' This means that a container from Magadha holding eighty khalas, filled to the brim with sesame seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years until the sesame seeds are exhausted, is said to be the lifespan of the blister hell. The lifespans of the lower hells are calculated by multiplying by twenty. Third, contemplate the suffering of the surrounding hells. The Treasury of Knowledge states: 'Beyond all eight, there are sixteen more, On each of their four sides, Pits of fire and rotting mire, Rivers of razor paths and so on.' Thus, each of the four sides of all eight hot hells has four places such as pits of fire, totaling sixteen. Whether emerging from the actual hot hell or being born there, no matter which direction one flees, one falls into a pit of fire up to the knees. As soon as the foot touches it, all the flesh and skin are burned, and as soon as it is lifted, it is restored. Even if one escapes the pit of fire, one falls into a mire of rotting corpses, extremely foul-smelling, where needle-like worms bore into the flesh, skin, and bones to eat.
