When the Venerable Padmasambhava emanated from a lotus stem in the Dhanakosha (Dhanakosha, धनकोश, धनकोष,Treasure Trove) island in the western part of Oddiyana (Oddiyana, ancient Indian region, meaning 'flying place'), King Indrabodhi invited him and enthroned him as the king of western Oddiyana. With great miraculous powers and deeds, he subdued the lands of Oddiyana and India. In the eight great charnel grounds, he resided in eight emanations, benefiting the dakinis. Later, the Tibetan King Bodhisattva Trisong Detsen invited him to the glorious Samye Monastery to pacify the ground and bring happiness to all subjects, and to propagate the Buddha's teachings. During a Tsokhorlo (gathering wheel) at Chimphu, the king and subjects prostrated and requested: 'Ah! Great Master, we Tibetan subjects are fortunate to meet a master like you, an emanation. We have heard many outer and inner secret teachings and received initiations into many secret mantra deity mandalas. Since there is a way to attain enlightenment by relying on the deity mandala, there is also a way to quickly attain enlightenment by entering the path of the guru. Now, we, the king and subjects, and future generations who will become disciples of the guru, earnestly request your compassionate teachings.' At that time, the Mahaguru (Mahaguru, Great Teacher) said: 'Ah! King, the methods and doors of the Great Vehicle Secret Mantra are inconceivable, but in summary, there are two ways to attain enlightenment in one lifetime: one is to receive initiation into the mandala of the deity and practice the profound generation and completion stages; the other is to receive initiation into the mandala of the guru's mind and practice the profound generation and completion stages. The path of the deity is suitable for those who gradually tame their faculties, and in summary, it can be summarized as outer and inner secret mantras. The path of the guru is suitable for those with sharp faculties and awakened karmic connections from previous lives, and in summary, it can be summarized as the complete mandala, the general practice of all gatherings, and the separate practice of individual minor details.' After the Guru thus instructed, he practiced the sadhana of the Vidyadhara Guru based on the general and specific tantras of the Vidyadhara Gathering. Either practicing as a complete mandala, or guiding each fortunate individual towards maturation and liberation through individual aspects such as a single deity couple or a single hero. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After it was spoken, Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal (mkha' 'gro ye shes mtsho rgyal) cataloged it and hid it as a treasure in the earth. Later, Nyagrel Nyima Öser (mnga' bdag nyang ral pa can) retrieved it from the treasure and gave it to his son Drowai Gonpo ('gro ba'i mgon po). He then gave it to Tak Sowa Chökyi Lama (stag so ba chos kyi bla ma), who gave it to Lama Nyanre (bla ma gnyan ras), who gave it to Lama Rinpoche Kuma Raja (bla ma rin po che ku ma rA dza), who gave it to the yogi Drime Özer (rnal 'byor pa dri med 'od zer). In addition, his son gave it to Khenpo Namlang (slob dpon nam langs), who gave it to Khenpo Jang Gon (slob dpon byang mgon), who gave it to Khenpo Tensung (slob dpon bstan srung), who then gave it to Drime Özer. The second part is the preliminary practice, including: taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, the seven-branch offering, the special path—generating bodhicitta in the ultimate dharmata, and supplication. The first is taking refuge: After offering the mandala, join your palms and recite: 'Namo! Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha, Lamas, yidams, and dakinis, All views, meditations, and actions, I take refuge in outer, inner, and secret.' Recite three times. Generating bodhicitta: 'Ema! I and all sentient beings, Are originally pure Buddhas, But are confused by not realizing it, May we be liberated from the ocean of existence. Om Maha Bodhicitta Ratna Patanamaḥ (oṃ mahābodhicitta ratna patanamaḥ, seed syllable, The great bodhicitta jewel, I prostrate)' Recite this mantra. In short, the common practice is: 'I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, And also in the Lama. For the benefit of all sentient beings, I generate the supreme bodhicitta.' Reciting this three times is also sufficient. The seven-branch offering: Visualize yourself and countless sentient beings as emanations, all practicing together: 'Namo! Lamas, yidams, and dakinis, May the Buddhas and their retinues come to this place. On a lotus seat in the sky in front, May you be seated like a cloud. Body, speech, and mind emanate infinitely, I prostrate with reverence and devotion. Actual offerings and imagined, I offer all the clouds of offerings. All the sins and obscurations accumulated in the past, I confess with regret, purify them. All the virtues of the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and sentient beings, I rejoice in. Outer, inner, and secret supreme Dharma, I urge you to turn the wheel of Dharma. To those who wish to enter nirvana, I beseech you not to enter nirvana.' 'By this virtue and others, May I quickly attain perfect Buddhahood.' Or: 'Om! The embodiment of all Sugatas, Lamas, yidams, and dakinis, As numerous as the dust particles of the fields, I prostrate with reverence and devotion. Pure five desirable qualities, Real and imagined emanations, All kinds of offerings, I offer to the Lamas and yidams.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
