Chapter on Treating Spleen Diseases. Then again, the wise sage spoke thus: O great sage, listen. Spleen diseases have causes, conditions, classifications, signs, and treatments described in four ways. The causes are indigestion, dampness, cold, and severe trauma. The classifications are spleen fever, blood swelling, spleen wind, spleen phlegm, and blockage, totaling five. Spleen fever worsens with alcohol consumption and warmth, the tongue is red, breathing is rapid, the lips and face are purple, the legs and feet are numb, and there is stabbing pain in the left lower ribs. Blood swelling is similar, with a bluish or yellowish color, a heavy abdomen, bloating, gurgling, and drooping corners of the mouth. Spleen wind causes body swelling, bloating, gurgling, and weak digestion. Belching or passing gas brings relief. Spleen phlegm causes phlegm to accumulate on the lips, worsens with cold and aging, and causes pain on the left side. Blockage causes bloating, gurgling, and uncontrollable diarrhea. The treatments for spleen fever are lychee, Terminalia chebula, cardamom, saffron, Picrorhiza kurroa, and Calendula officinalis. Powdered Eclipta prostrata mixed with sugar is administered. Terminalia chebula and saffron, Arura (Terminalia chebula), mixed with sugar are administered, and bloodletting is performed on the spleen veins. For blood swelling, use Manu, long pepper, cardamom, camphor, Donggaraṇa, Liesha, rock salt and cinnamon, alkaline salt, and jaggery mixed together, and perform bloodletting on the chest and spleen veins. For both spleen wind and phlegm, administer a decoction of Vitex negundo and rock salt. Cardamom, small cardamom, cinnamon, rock salt, cumin, three hot spices, and jaggery are mixed. Moxibustion is performed on the spleen and eleven points. For blockage, administer powdered Kasho, Kanda, alkaline salt, and rock salt. Moxibustion is performed as above, and yak and marmot meat are given. The powerful hand and saffron, in three forms, mixed with jaggery, can eliminate all spleen diseases. Thus it was said.
