Greed, delusion, and hatred are more reversed than before. If the faults and merits of past actions change into other forms, that person is said to have fallen into the power of the Lord of Death. In the sun, mirror, water, and sky, if the reflection has no head and limbs, one will die. Then there are two kinds of near signs: near and very near. In the near signs, without being struck by poison or weapons, blood flows from the nine orifices, one forgets immediately after speaking, the penis shrinks, the testicles droop or are reversed, phlegm becomes numb, unprecedented sounds appear, one cannot smell the odor of a dying butter lamp, one does not feel when combing hair, and the crown of the head appears oily. The newly grown hair and eyebrows split, become rough and curly, and water lines, crescent lines, and blood vessel lines appear on the forehead. Without the usual cause, the five senses completely change, and phenomena of existence and non-existence are reversed. One cannot see the wrist and the space between the eyebrows, the eyes are squeezed shut and without light, like a rabbit being pressed down. The ears are like hiding in a hole or like a queen losing her radiance, one will die. The ears shrink and stick together, tinnitus is interrupted, and if there is no shadow of steam from the head, one will die. The nostrils are open and the nasal hairs turn white, the middle of the tongue turns black, dry, and short, and one cannot speak. The lower lip droops, the upper lip is pursed, dust accumulates on the face, the breath is cold, and there is dirt on the teeth. Gasping upwards and the body temperature disappearing indicates death. The body is cold but feverish, suffering from cold but abandoning fever, and similarly suffering from fever but abandoning cold. Doing according to the ritual has no effect on treating the disease, and reversing the ritual makes one think one will be comfortable. These are the signs of death that are spoken of. The very near signs are the five elements, the five senses gradually dissolving in sequence. Earth dissolves into water, so one cannot see things. Water dissolves into fire, so the orifices are dry. Fire dissolves into wind, so all body heat is gathered. Wind dissolves into space, so external breathing ceases. The function of the eyes declines, so one cannot see things clearly, and it dissolves into sound. The function of the ears declines, so one cannot hear sounds clearly, and it dissolves into smell. The function of the nose declines, so one cannot smell odors clearly, and it dissolves into taste. The function of the tongue declines, so one cannot taste flavors clearly, and it dissolves into touch. The function of the body declines, so one cannot feel touch. From uncertain signs of death and many disease symptoms, even if signs of death appear, the disease

by pacifying the signs of death. If pacified, yet the signs remain firm, then death is certain. The three, inner and outer life essence, flesh, food, and veins, whichever the patient loses, death is certain. Even if various rituals are performed for the illness, if there is no cure, then death is certain. Thus, the signs of the body's destruction, due to the disturbance of illness, bodily essence, and excretions, one harming the other and abandoning life, are like the collapse of Mount Meru in the future. Not knowing the signs of death obstructs the acceptance and rejection of healing. Not knowing this does not gain fame. Therefore, those who desire to be wise should understand the signs of death. Dreams that change and are prolonged are uncertain signs. Accumulate merit, recite scriptures, practice, and avert the deity threefold. Perform death ransom for near and certain signs. There is no way to avert very near signs. Thus it is said. The seventh chapter, which is the chapter on the signs of the body's destruction, from the Secret Oral Instruction Tantra of the Eight Branches of the Ambrosia Heart Essence. Chapter Eight: Explanation of the Causes of Disease Then again, the sage Yid-las-kye asked: O Teacher, Sage, Wisdom of Awareness, how should we learn about the nature of increasing and decreasing diseases? Please explain, O life- giving King of Physicians! Having asked thus, the Teacher spoke: O Great Sage, listen! Whatever body is healed arises from that. If one is to learn about the nature of increasing and decreasing diseases, then one must learn about the cause, condition, mode of entry, location, and characteristics, as well as their individual classifications and meanings, in seven ways. First, there are two causes: distant cause and near cause. The distant cause has two aspects: general and specific. First, the various disturbed states of disease, countless changes torment the body. It is impossible to point out each of these causes, therefore, one must explain the general cause of all diseases. The cause of all diseases is only one, which is ignorance, arising from not realizing the meaning of selflessness. For example, even though a bird soars in the sky, it cannot escape its own shadow. Although all beings live and act in happiness, because they possess ignorance, they cannot be separated from disease. The specific cause arises from ignorance, the three poisons of desire, hatred, and delusion, which give rise to the three imbalances of wind, bile, and phlegm. The near cause is the three, wind, bile, and phlegm, if they do not change, then there is no
