Likewise, although all the powers of the Buddha are present, they are invisible and cannot be distinguished individually. Once cultivated through the practice of the path, everything will become manifest. All practices of the path have the function of possessing four characteristics: if the practice of any path can abandon or will abandon the sudden evil defilements of that mind-stream, it has the characteristic of transformation; because all dharmas are free from elaboration, therefore practicing freedom from elaboration; and practicing impermanence, such as practicing all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, etc., which is in accordance with the nature of the ground stage, is the characteristic of following the immutable. Here, the meaning of immutable, whether it is conventional truth or ultimate truth, is the name of its own nature. The ability to manifest the signs of the path, such as the signs of non-retrogression, as well as various appearances of experience, and the merits of the path such as clairvoyance and magical powers, is the characteristic of having appearance. When the fruit is manifested by practicing the path, if the faults of obscuration are gradually removed, then the characteristic of ability will gradually increase, which is the characteristic of increasing ability. Transforming the two obscurations into the nature of non-arising is the characteristic of self-nature purity, just as the essence of gold is never rust, the self-nature of mind has never arisen as the essence of defilement, therefore the self-nature of mind is pure from the two obscurations, and the clarity is continuous, which is self-nature purity. And without conceptual thought, spontaneously accomplishing the benefit of beings, and the manifestation of pure realms arising from the self-appearance of one's own wisdom, is activity. Just as when cataracts are removed, the original qualities of the eyes can clearly see objects, the manifestation of the original power of the mind is merit. In general, from the power of the mind, the knowable that appears as external objects, and the path of the mind becoming the essence of mind-itself, through practice, the defilements of the mind's appearance are removed, and the path of mere mind-appearance can obtain many merits, and the fruit of mere mind-appearance can be manifested, therefore, the root, the one mind, appears as the basis, path, and fruit of the appearance aspect.

No. Regarding that, the first two of the four sets mentioned above are at the base stage, and the other two are combined with the path and the result. From the dependent arising of the mind's primordial nature having four powers, the four dharmas appear in the outer world, and one must practice the path with four characteristics, and the result also appears with four distinctions. That is, because the mind has the power to change, the appearance of the melting element that performs the action of changing outward appears. When practicing the path, it is obtained from habituation. For example, previously there was no compassion. When one becomes accustomed to compassion, one transforms from the previous state and becomes great compassion. When that habituation reaches its ultimate point, one only abides in that, and later one will not revert to having no compassion. When the result is achieved, it is the sudden manifestation of purity. Similarly, due to the dependent arising of the unchanging nature of the mind, the appearance of the solid element whose essence cannot be changed appears. The path must also be practiced by following that unchanging nature. The result also manifests the purity of nature, which is primordially unchanging. Because the mind has the characteristic of appearance, it produces various uncertain rises and falls, such as trees and crops. In the stage of the path, various experiences and signs also appear, and the result shows limitless fields and activities. Because the mind has the characteristic of power, from the coarse earth element, the appearance of the three subtle elements that pervade and perform the action of rising and falling appears. When practicing the path, the power increases, which helps the nature of the mind to manifest. This help causes all the qualities of the result to manifest. Therefore, the first four of each of the four sets, from the same mode of dependent arising, etc., up to the last four of all the sets, must be combined. These are called the sixteen suchness, because they are what establish reality, therefore they are called suchness. Explaining the order of practice for each of them. Third, meditating on impermanence and other meditations with objects are the practice of the first set, because they are not the practice of primordial nature. First is the transformation of the base.
