Instructions. Among the benefits of taking vows, the essence of the vows is: In the Pratimoksha vows, there are vows to completely abandon the ten non-virtuous actions, and various situations of abandoning parts of non-virtuous actions. Among them, the essence of the Upavasa vows is also the vows to refrain from the ten non-virtuous actions. The difference in the basis of the taker is: The Sarvastivadins of the Hearer school believe that only men and women of the three continents of Jambudvipa, Purvavideha, and Uttarakuru can take them. The Sutrantikas and Mahayanists believe that even non-human beings such as nagas, yakshas, and gods can generate vows if they take them with sincere faith from the bottom of their hearts. Therefore, according to the views of the upper schools, it is stable to abide in reality. The object from whom to take the vows: The Sarvastivadins believe that one must take them only from a bhikshu. The proponents of the schools above the Sutrantikas believe that one can obtain them by taking them from any of a bhikshu, a shramanera, or a upasaka/upasika. The length of time to take them: Although everyone generally agrees that it is limited to a day and night, the Sarvastivadins do not recognize special circumstances. The Sutrantikas and Mahayanists believe that guarding day and night is the usual right of Upavasa, but in special circumstances, if one cannot guard day and night and only promises to guard for a day, even if the time limit is not reached, it can become an Upavasa vow. If one can guard for more than a day, no matter how many days one can guard, if one abides in the precepts with intention, it is also considered an Upavasa vow. However, the Sarvastivadins believe that the time limit for guarding the Upavasa vows cannot be more or less than a day, and even if one guards, it is only a meritorious act and not considered a vow. How to take them: There are two ways to take them, namely the actual way of taking them and the difference in the ritual of taking them. The actual way of taking them is, as the Abhidharmakosha says: "Sit on a low seat, repeat the words, do not adorn oneself with ornaments, until the next morning, take the complete Upavasa vows, and tomorrow receive them from another." This is the way to take the vows, that is, sit on a low seat. Repeat as the acharya allows to grant the vows. Do not adorn oneself with new ornaments until dawn the next day.

The vows of fasting, which completely protect the eight branches, must be taken in the morning at dawn from another teacher. The Vaibhāṣika school believes that it must always be taken from others. The Śrāvakayāna Sūtra school and the Mahāyāna school must first take it from the teacher, but then they believe that it can also be obtained by taking it yourself. The difference in the ritual of taking is that, in the tradition of the Hinayana Śrāvakas, it is believed that the vows of fasting are obtained by taking refuge as a preliminary and making three promises. The Mahāyānas believe that it is obtained by taking refuge as a preliminary and making promises related to generating Bodhicitta. One must abide in the precepts of fasting with eight branches. Abiding in the precepts of abandoning the four roots is a branch of morality. Each of the four roots, if the four branches of basis, intention, action, and culmination are complete, the vows will be destroyed. The basis has two aspects: the support and the object. Intention has two aspects: motivation and perception. There is no definite distinction between action and culmination. For everything, the support is knowing that the vows have been obtained and not broken, and abiding naturally. The object of killing is other beings who are human and becoming human. Taking what is not given is the value of the complete object possessed by human beings, such as five mashakas or a quarter of a karshapana, which is about half a silver coin. Not practicing celibacy relies on the three undamaged doors of the reproductive, oral, and urinary tracts. Lying is speech that transforms the perception of what is not a superior human quality and says that it is, and the object is speaking to human beings. The motivation of intention, killing is generating the intention to kill from the bottom of one's heart. Taking what is not given is wanting to take the possessions of others as one's own. Not practicing celibacy is wanting to rely on sexual acts. Lying is lying about superior human qualities, lying by transforming perception, wanting to speak. Perception is, for killing, not confusing the mind that knows that it is not a mistake, such as mistaking the god-given (देव,deva, god) for the object to be killed, mistaking the sacrificial offering for the object to be killed. Taking what is not given is confusing the object to be taken with one's own object and perception.
