Seeing the benefits of gathering, one should give alms. 21-635 The objects of almsgiving are the field of merit, such as monks; Brahmins who practice the Dharma at home; the field of suffering, such as the poor and the sick; the field of benefit, such as parents and friends who are worthy of gratitude. These are the main objects mentioned with great benefits. When giving alms, one's behavior and thoughts must be pure. In thought, one should respect the superior objects and generate compassion and altruism towards the inferior. In behavior, one should give respectfully, give at the right time, and give appropriately, that is, giving alms that are in accordance with the object of almsgiving, giving according to the Dharma and discipline. Such almsgiving, given in accordance with the Dharma, has the benefit of obtaining perfect happiness and rewards in the next life, and is an unparalleled and supreme friend. How to learn the principles of discipline, and the benefits of keeping discipline are: You should keep the discipline that is not degraded, not high, not mixed, and not defiled. Discipline is said to be the foundation and basis of all virtues, like the land for seeds and non-seeds. Wise ones like you should keep and rely on the discipline that has four characteristics, that is, the discipline that is not degraded, not high, not mixed, and not defiled, which has four characteristics. It is said that breaking the precepts does not bring benefits, but relies on antidotes and tranquility. Thus, guarding the root and branches without degenerating in practice is the discipline of non-degeneration. Even if one guards without degenerating in practice, but the antidote is not strong, and the mind is disturbed by afflictions, the discipline also becomes inferior due to weakness. Therefore, not harboring unwholesome thoughts such as greed and malice in the mind, guarding the discipline is the discipline of non-elevation. Not being attached to the impure, cultivating antidotes such as loving-kindness and dependent origination, so that it does not mix with afflictions, is the discipline of non-mixture. The so-called discipline of saving the world is not dividing life or bearing military taxes.

Liberation from arising and ceasing, etc., or fame in this life (respect, gain, gathering of retinues, etc.) For the sake of protection, guarding the precepts is tainted by the conceptual thoughts of this life. Not being tainted by these, there is also the precept called good aspiration. If one guards the precepts in order to attain the happiness of higher realms of gods and humans in future lives, this is also tainted by craving for the happiness of samsara. Not being tainted by these, the precepts that necessarily arise in order to seek liberation are the untainted precepts, which possess four characteristics. The Mahayana practitioners not only possess four characteristics, but also do not merely seek liberation for themselves. Rather, they train in the precepts that arise from the desire to liberate all sentient beings from samsara. Here, in the commentary of the great scholar Prajnavarman, it is said that the gathering of one branch of training declines, (མདོ་, Devanagari, , Literal meaning) has passed, and it is said that women speak, but it is not seen well. Thus, the benefits of guarding the precepts are that sentient beings who move, such as humans and animals, also rely on the earth to grow. Mountains, forests, gardens, rivers, crops, etc., inanimate objects also arise from the earth. All qualities such as samadhi and wisdom also arise from precepts, therefore precepts are the basis of all of these, as the Victorious One has said. Connected with faith 21-637 The uncommon practice of the Great Vehicle speaks of the six perfections as the cause and the two Buddha-grounds as the result. Generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and likewise, wisdom immeasurable, gone to the other shore. May these increase the ocean of existence, gone to the other shore, make the lord of the victorious ones. This means that from the perfection of generosity, immeasurable and boundless, to the perfection of discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, immeasurable and boundless, may these six increase without bias. The way to increase is to be grasped by the thought of great compassion in the preliminary stage, and in the main stage, various doors of generosity.
