The object of my exhortation is a king who is endowed with the perfection of lineage and clan, and who possesses the qualities of wisdom, generosity, faith, diligence, and so on. He is one who always acts virtuously and abides in appropriate and reasonable conduct. I, Nāgārjuna, the exhorter, state that the nature of the exhortation is not self-created, but rather as it appears in the scriptures of the Sugata. {Words that arise from repeating [doubling] the meaning [of] 'with' are exhortations.} The purpose is that the king desires merit, or for the sake of increasing virtuous intention. The manner of exhortation is as follows: From among the various meters, the uneven combinations are arranged into excellent meters, that is, from the ocean-like scriptures {spoken [of speech]} by the Buddha, a few of the closely needed meanings are compiled. These, O King, you should listen to. The extended meaning of the introduction is: Just as the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, is worshiped by the wise, no matter how it is made. Similarly, although my poetry is poor, it should not be despised because it relies on proclaiming the Dharma. If someone says: The exhorter is bad, it is not worth listening to. Then, just as the body of the Sugata Buddha, even if made of ordinary wood, with imperfect form and proportions, is still an object of worship for wise and knowledgeable people because it is a Buddha image. Similarly, I, Nāgārjuna, am an ordinary person, a bad exhorter, and my {of} poetry is poor and imperfect, but because it relies on flawlessly proclaiming the meaning of the Buddha's scriptures, the sacred Dharma, {that is} because it relies on it, because it is a repetition of the words previously spoken by the Buddha, it should not be despised, but should be accepted. This is a humble statement. Furthermore, the extended meaning is: The words of the Great Sage are beautiful, and even if you already understand them in your heart, why can't the moonlight made of lime be even whiter? The Buddha's...
