From then on, craving for the aggregates of one's own continuum, desiring its perfection, such as being stingy with possessions and wanting to accumulate them, as well as self-aggrandizement, wanting good aggregates and practicing the samadhi of formless meditation, are all included. Although the four graspings are spoken of with different terms in the two Abhidharma texts, the main point is the same. The dependent arising of existence is: in the existence of becoming, becoming a strong force of karma that connects the rebirth [decisively] is existence. Among them, there are three types: the karma of existence is weak, the existence of death is medium, and the existence of rebirth is strong. The dependent arising of birth is: the various births of womb-born, spontaneously born, moisture-born, and egg-born beings. The dependent arising of aging and death is: the aggregates changing and aging, sickness, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, etc., up to death. Thus, the twelve dependent arisings are encompassed by the three paths, or the three all-pervasive afflictions, namely the path of affliction, the path of karma, and the path of suffering. Or, the three all-pervasive afflictions are: affliction pervading all afflictions, karma pervading all afflictions, and suffering pervading all afflictions. Regarding this, Nagarjuna himself said in the Essence of Dependent Arising in the Middle Way: The first, eighth, and ninth are afflictions, the second and tenth are karma, the remaining seven are suffering. That is, the first, ignorance; the eighth, craving; and the ninth, grasping, are afflictions. The second, formation; and the tenth, existence, are karma. The remaining five, such as consciousness, and the two, birth and death, these seven are called suffering. From these three, two arise; from two, seven arise; and from seven, three also arise. This wheel of existence revolves again and again. That is, from affliction arises karma, and from karma arises suffering. Its end will not be exhausted, but again from suffering arises affliction, thus continuously revolving in a cycle. Among them, the five limbs of karma and affliction are the cause, and the seven limbs of suffering are encompassed by the result.
