Instructions on meditation. The principle of dependent origination in the forward direction is: From ignorance arises action, from action arises consciousness, from consciousness arises name and form, from name and form arise the six sense bases, from the six sense bases arises contact, as taught by the capable one. From contact arises all feelings, from the basis of feeling arises craving, from craving arises grasping, from grasping arises becoming, from becoming arises birth. If there is birth, there will be sorrow, suffering, old age, poverty due to desire, fear of death, etc., thus causing a great mass of suffering. From ignorance as the condition arises action, from action as the condition arises (consciousness). From consciousness as the condition, name and form will arise. From name and form as the condition arises the six sense bases, from the six sense bases as the condition, the capable one said that contact will arise. From contact as the condition, all feelings will arise, the so-called basis of feeling is feeling itself, and it is also the basis from which craving and so on arise, therefore it is indicated by the term "gathering of common basis." From feeling as the condition, becoming will arise. From becoming as the condition, grasping will arise. From grasping as the condition, becoming will arise. From becoming as the condition, birth will arise. From birth as the condition, old age and death will arise, that is, wherever there is birth, there will be sorrow, sickness, old age, poverty of desire, and various kinds of fears such as death, thus causing a great and unbearable mass of suffering. Merely showing the reversal of dependent origination: When birth ceases, all this ceases. This means that when birth ceases, old age and death cease, and similarly, from the cessation of becoming, birth ceases, and so on, until from the cessation of ignorance, action ceases, all should be applied in reverse order. The greatness of dependent origination is shown as follows: This dependent arising is the Victorious One's, The profound treasure of the treasury of speech, Whoever truly sees this, By wisdom sees the supreme Buddha. This teaching of dependent arising is the supreme teaching of the Victorious, perfectly enlightened Buddha.

This is the precious essence of the great treasury of Dharma, difficult to understand but becoming very important once understood, therefore it is profound. To truly and without reversal see the meaning of dependent origination is to realize the suchness of the four noble truths, and is the direct realization of the supreme and unerring sixteen aspects, etc. If one possesses vast accumulations, one will become a Buddha; moderate accumulations will lead to a Pratyekabuddha; small accumulations will lead to a Shravaka Arhat. Here, I will briefly discuss the general meaning: Ignorance, action, consciousness, name and form, six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, old age, and death are the twelve links. Here, we discuss the nature of dependent origination, the classification and identification of the twelve links, and how they revolve in the three times. First, the nature is that which arises from conditions, that is, the meaning of various favorable causes and conditions coming together to produce a result. Second, the classification of the nature has two types: the dependent origination of affliction and the dependent origination of purification. The first is from ignorance as the condition for action, to birth as the condition for old age and death. The second is from the cessation of ignorance, the cessation of action, to the cessation of birth, the cessation of old age and death. Distinguishing the way to practice and realize dependent origination with the wisdom that can realize, there are two types: forward and reverse. The first is ignorance gives rise to action, the cessation of ignorance causes the cessation of action, and so on until birth gives rise to old age and death, the cessation of birth causes the cessation of old age and death, thinking in this forward manner. The second is from birth giving rise to old age and death, the cessation of birth causes the cessation of old age and death, and so on back to ignorance, cultivating in this reverse order. From the perspective of different establishments, there are momentary dependent origination, continuous dependent origination, temporary dependent origination, and relational dependent origination. The first is that no matter what virtuous or non-virtuous action is initiated with ignorance, it is considered that the mind and body of the actor possess all twelve links of dependent origination in a moment. Continuous dependent origination is samsara without beginning.
