The Suffering of Tshe-pa It is shown [explained]. Here, the suffering of the cold hells and the surrounding [and] minor hells are not mentioned because those hells are small in area and few beings are born there, so they are not mentioned because they are not important. But the hot hells are important, so they are mentioned. If you think that the suffering of hell is so far away that it will not happen immediately, then it is shown to be near: For a sinner, just a moment after the breath stops, the immeasurable suffering of hell is obtained, in emptiness, what fearless 21-711 is the nature of a vajra. Sinful actions are accumulated. If the sinful person who has not purified them, is in the human world until his breath stops, and after his breath stops, the suffering of hell manifests, then between the two, there is only the moment when the breath stops. But is it that one is born in hell immediately after the breath stops? If you ask, after the breath stops, there is the dying consciousness, and after that, the intermediate state arises, so it is not that one is born in hell immediately and without interruption after the breath stops. However, for sinners, at the moment when the breath stops, and in the intermediate state [also], the appearance of the suffering of hell [pre-]greets and begins. When one hears [obtains] that such immeasurable suffering of hell occurs quickly, the wise become frightened and sad, infinitely and boundlessly. But after hearing those, the fools who are not afraid are like those whose hearts are as hard as the nature of a vajra because they are mindless [objects]. Showing the intensity of the suffering of hell: Seeing and hearing the painted hell, and remembering, reading, and shaping, also cause fear, what need is there to say when experiencing the unbearable, fully ripened result? Seeing the form of hell painted in pictures, hearing the detailed account of the suffering of hell, remembering it in the mind as heard, reading the words of the suffering of hell spoken in the scriptures, and the arrangement of hell, the form of painted reliefs, and the form of play dances, etc.

That is, just seeing and hearing the suffering of hell is enough to cause sadness and fear. If unbearable suffering of ripening karma descends and is experienced firsthand, what more needs to be said? In general, all the suffering of hell is particularly intense. The most extreme suffering of hell is identified as: Among all pleasures, just as one becomes the master of bliss by exhausting craving, similarly, among all sufferings, the suffering of Avīci hell is utterly unbearable. Among all pleasures, the bliss of exhausting craving is the bliss of abandoning the afflictions of the three realms, such as attaining the state of an Arhat, which is the master of all pleasures, the ultimate that is supreme or chief. Just as that is, among all the sufferings of samsara, even the general suffering of hell is intense, and especially the suffering of Avīci hell is the ultimate of utterly unbearable suffering. Even a small suffering of hell cannot be compared to other sufferings, which shows: In this world, the pain of being fiercely stabbed three hundred times in a day with short spears, is not even a small fraction of the small suffering of hell, it cannot be compared, it cannot be endured. In this world, the pain experienced by a person whose body is fiercely stabbed three hundred times in a day with short spears without dying cannot be compared to even a small suffering of hell. Such suffering cannot even be compared to the suffering of hell, because there is not even a similarity to the suffering of hell, let alone being able to endure one percent of the suffering. Showing that the suffering of hell is long-lasting: Such suffering is extremely unbearable, and even if experienced for hundreds of millions of eons, as long as the non-virtue is not exhausted, one will not be separated from life. Thus, the suffering of hell is extremely unbearable and will be experienced firsthand, in the cold hell the body

The body is blasted into hundreds of thousands of pieces, in the hot hells the body is chopped into hundreds of thousands of pieces, melting like butter together with molten copper, and so on. Even if this is done, one is revived again and again, experiencing intense suffering for hundreds of millions of years. However, as long as the negative karma that causes rebirth in hell is not exhausted, one will not be separated from life, and therefore one will continuously experience suffering. Advice on abandoning the cause of hellish suffering: The seeds of these non-virtuous results are: the misdeeds committed by your body, speech, and mind. In any case, make sure that not even a speck of dust remains. Strive in this way with your own strength. Non-virtue, the seed of suffering, is the accumulation of non-virtuous actions committed by body, speech, and mind. King, in any case, abandon the non-virtuous actions, leaving not even a speck of dust. In this way, generate the power of your mind, strive diligently, and abandon them with important effort. Explanation of the suffering of animals: Even in the realm of animals, there is killing, bondage, beating, and various other sufferings. For those who abandon the virtuous deeds that lead to peace, one eats another, which is extremely unbearable. Some are killed for pearls, wool, bones, meat, and leather. Helpless others are driven by being beaten with feet, hands, whips, and iron hooks. Abiding in the flawless bliss of the cessation of suffering is close to peace. In this way, having abandoned the virtuous Dharma that brings about peace, and having practiced the ten medium and small non-virtuous deeds, one will be reborn in the realm of animals, where there is only suffering. Animals owned by humans are killed by their owners, tied to stakes, bound in various ways, beaten with whips and sticks, and so on. There are also many who are made to carry loads, and so on. Animals without owners eat each other, experiencing the suffering of such fear. Some are killed for pearls, wool, bones, [blood] meat, and leather, for the use of others. Furthermore, some animals without freedom...
