The first of the inverted views is abandoned by mindfulness of the body; The second is mindfulness of feelings, the third is mindfulness of mind, and the fourth is abandoned by mindfulness of phenomena. These four mindfulnesses, although they should be cultivated from the time of the path of accumulation, are specifically mentioned here in the context of the path of seeing, which is from the perspective of direct vision. Obtaining the wisdom [actually] endowed with the characteristics of the four mindfulnesses, and the extinguishing of the seeds of the four inversions, is in the path of seeing, so it is taught here. The meaning of the text is that all of samsara, represented by the human realm, although ordinary beings cannot comprehend with their intellect, the true state of affairs is that all contaminated samsaric dharmas are unpleasant and painful, all compounded things are impermanent, whatever anything may be, all dharmas are selfless, and the skandhas should be known and understood as having an impure nature. The reason for this is that those who do not possess mindfulness are disturbed by clinging to the four inverted views, {disturbing [disturbed], becoming a great burden that causes various sufferings of samsara. Form is 21-687 not self, as it is said, self, is not associated with form, self does not dwell in form, form does not dwell in self, likewise, the remaining four skandhas should also be realized as emptiness. Form is not me or mine, as it is said, form and self are not of the same essence, form and self are not associated, just as a person and his property, they do not depend on each other. Self does not rely on and dwell in form, nor is it {relied [permanently], like a tree on the ground, nor does self rely on form, nor is it like form arising from self, similarly, it should be applied to feelings, perceptions, and formations. Consciousness does not dwell in the essence of self. Consciousness is not related to self. There is no self in consciousness. There is no consciousness in self. The five skandhas are empty, and should be realized as selfless. At this time, a brief summary is made.

In short, regarding the ascertainment of the self-grasping to be abandoned and the wisdom of realizing selflessness that abandons it, among these two, first, the first is explained, which is divided into essence, distinction, classification, etc. First is the essence: the consciousness that grasps the five aggregates of appropriation as the object, grasping 'I' as self. Second is the distinction: the self that is falsely attributed as permanent, singular, and independent, i.e., 'I did these things in the past, and I will do those things in the future,' thus falsely attributing the self as permanent; thinking that only the self is most important, only the self can be liberated from fear, thus grasping the self as having the unique characteristic of not being mixed with others; and grasping the self as having an independent nature that does not rely on conceptual imputation, this is grasping as independent. Classification: from grasping the form aggregate as self to grasping the consciousness aggregate as self, these five are the actual self-grasping. Similarly, applying the distinctions of the five aggregates to it, i.e., five kinds such as form being associated with self, five kinds such as self existing in form, and five kinds such as form existing in self, these fifteen are grasping as 'mine,' totaling twenty views of the aggregates. Second, the wisdom of realizing selflessness that abandons it refers to truly knowing that there is originally no self in the reality of phenomena. So, how is it that there is no self in reality? As stated in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way: 'If the aggregates are the self, then they should have arising and ceasing. If the self is different from the aggregates, then it should not have the characteristics of the aggregates.' This means that the collections of consciousnesses such as the eye and mental factors such as virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified conceptual thoughts are not what recognize, manifest, and grasp, but only the mind of self-view recognizes, manifests, and grasps. If the self truly exists, then it must be consistent with the way the mind of self-grasping grasps it. However, the five aggregates of appropriation are impermanent and have the characteristic of arising and ceasing. If the aggregates are the self, then the self must have the characteristic of arising and ceasing. But this is inconsistent with the way the mind of self-grasping grasps the self as permanent, therefore the aggregates are not the self. Moreover, the self is not separate from the aggregates, and the aggregates are not the source of suffering.
