The vast roots of virtue of those people, which have achieved great power, will not be harmed. Those who possess the power of virtuous deeds can destroy small sins, rendering them without result. Please understand it that way. The fourth point is advice on avoiding the five obscurations: agitation and regret, as well as malice and torpor, sleep and longing for desire, and doubt. These five obscurations, know that they are thieves who steal the wealth of virtue. Agitation: In the Abhidharma, in the context of the twenty subsidiary afflictions, attachment to desirable qualities is described as a particular way of thinking. But here, it refers to not preventing and accepting distracting thoughts that arise towards objects of the three times. Regret: Regret over virtue and indeterminate things is definitely an obscuration. Regret over sin is not necessarily an obscuration in all cases, because confessing sins is necessary and sometimes becomes a virtuous thing. But in the state of meditative equipoise, even if regret over sin arises, it disturbs the mind and becomes an obstacle to meditation, so it is an obscuration. Malice: Always thinking of tormenting sentient beings. Torpor: The object is not clear, and the mind becomes thickly obscured. Sleep is easy to understand. Longing for desire: Being attached to desire and wanting to obtain it. Doubt: In general, all doubt is an obstacle to meditation. Especially doubting the object of focus. In that way, there are seven categories, but agitation and regret are of the same kind, so they are counted as one. Sleep and torpor are also counted as one, so there are five obscurations in total. They obstruct the three trainings: malice and longing for desire obstruct the training of ethics. Agitation, regret, sleep, and torpor obstruct the training of samadhi. Doubt obstructs the training of wisdom. These five obscurations are like thieves who steal the wealth of virtuous riches, so recognize this and strive.
