It is said that cultivating samadhi and being born in dhyana is only a small part. The samadhi of dhyana is not said to be limited to this method of cultivation. It is also acknowledged here that one must abandon the manifestation of afflictions of the desire realm and accomplish the samadhi of dhyana. The first three, such as loving-kindness, abandon the manifestation of anger, the uncommon affliction of the desire realm. Equanimity abandons subsequent attachment, and incidentally abandons other afflictions of the desire realm. The four immeasurables are the samadhi of a mind focused on virtue. Therefore, those who have previously attained the samadhi of dhyana, or whose habitual tendencies of having been born in the dhyana realm have awakened, or whose attainment of the samadhi of dhyana has been interrupted by other conditions and the fruit has not ripened, and whose karma to be experienced in other lifetimes may awaken, are led by the cultivation of the four immeasurables to attain the samadhi of dhyana in this life and be born in the dhyana realm in the next. Secondly, the instruction on cultivating the samadhi of the four dhyanas is: Abandoning desire, pleasure, joy, and suffering, through the four dhyanas, one obtains the same fortune as the gods of Brahma, Clear Light, Increasing Virtue, and Great Fruit. The four dhyanas of causal absorption are: Only those that are attained by cultivating the samadhi of dhyana on the basis of a human body and are included in the ground of equipoise. The four dhyanas of resultant birth are: In the previous life, the samadhi of dhyana was accomplished on the basis of a desire realm god or a human body. Therefore, its result is that from the time of being born in the dhyana realm until death, without effort, the mind naturally abides in the samadhi of dhyana. This is the actual dhyana of resultant birth, and its place, body, and enjoyment are also merely designated by the name of the dhyana of resultant birth. In terms of the dhyana of causal absorption, what is to be abandoned is desire for desire {first [actually] shown, malice is also implied by this, because if one of the two exists, the other must also exist. Calm abiding is without fault.

After perfecting the habit, craving arises for desire, and by meditating on the antidote to hatred, the feeling of suffering and discomfort, and the afflictions of desire, are all manifestly abandoned. From this, the joy and happiness arising from the mind's extreme solitude are attained. This is the samadhi of the first dhyana, which is the previous thought of happiness (with the faults of thought and examination). The term 'examination' implies thought, because abandoning examination requires abandoning thought first. The two thoughts of thought and examination, which roughly show the object of focus (with thought and in detail), are recognized as faults of yoga and abandoned by the antidote. Therefore, the mind no longer thinks about the object of focus, and thus dwells in the joy and happiness of inner purity (within). This is the samadhi of the second dhyana. Recognizing that attachment to joy is also incompatible with samadhi, one abandons it after observing one's own nature, and thus there is no joy, and one dwells in the happiness of (body) and mind. This is the samadhi of the third dhyana. Recognizing that happiness is also a fault of dhyana, one abandons it, and thus the samadhi of equanimity is clear, pure, and unwavering (that) is the samadhi of the fourth dhyana. All four dhyanas are similar in that they appear as one-pointed concentration in the (own) coarse mind stream, but the difference is that (there) it is said that the joy and happiness arising from extreme solitude of mind, because the afflictions of desire and suffering disturb the mind, leading to distraction and weariness. From the attainment of the samadhi of the first dhyana, weariness is eliminated, and thus the joy and happiness of attaining solitude arise even more. The joy and happiness of extreme inner purity is the happiness of the samadhi of one-pointedness of mind in the second dhyana, and one dwells in the joy of attachment to it. The third dhyana is dwelling in the happiness of abandoning joy, and in the fourth dhyana, it is said that suffering is abandoned, because the feeling of suffering (manifest) has already been abandoned in the first dhyana. Therefore, there is not much to be newly abandoned here, but because happiness is abandoned, in order to eliminate the doubt of whether it is the same as suffering, both suffering and happiness are abandoned.
