Non-attention and attention, these are considered as five faults. And, the eight attentions that eliminate these are: place and, abiding in that place and, cause and effect. These are the first four. Not forgetting the object of focus and, being aware of sinking and excitement and, the present attention that eliminates these and, abiding in reality when pacified. These are the latter four. The meaning of this is, Mahāravakamalaśīla said: In short, there are six faults of samādhi, namely: laziness and, forgetting the object of focus, sinking and, excitement and, non-effort and, effort. The antidotes to these are also, eliminated by the eight attentions of elimination. As follows: faith and, desire and, diligence and, great joy and, mindfulness and, awareness and, attention and, equanimity. Among these, the first four are the antidotes to laziness, as follows: those yogis who have great faith in the qualities of samādhi and possess the characteristics of faith develop desire. After that, the diligence of desire arises. By the power of diligence, the body and mind become capable. After that, because the body and mind become very joyful, laziness recedes, therefore, faith and so on are cultivated in order to eliminate laziness. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus. Awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, because it can truly understand sinking and excitement. When sinking and excitement have not yet subsided, non-effort is a fault, therefore, attention is cultivated as its antidote. When sinking and excitement have already subsided, when anyone's mind abides in reality, effort is a fault, therefore, equanimity is its antidote. Being in accordance with these eight attentions of elimination is to deeply enter into samādhi, as stated in the Stages of Meditation. For this, the cause of diligence is faith, the basis or place is desire, abiding in that place is diligence, the result of diligence is great joy, these four methods of abiding the mind should be combined with the stages and order of the first four. Forgetting the object of focus, the antidote to scattering from conceptual thought is mindfulness, it should be known at the time of taming and pacifying, with awareness observing when and how sinking and

Knowing excitement, therefore, one should know that excitement is the antidote to what the mind should not do, thereby becoming extremely tranquil, and when the mind is in a state of one-pointedness, 20-340 Awareness. The antidote of non-effort, why is the mind the antidote of non-effort? That is also non-effort, that is, non-effort in one-pointedness, which can be obtained at the time of excitement. The mind is, as it is said, what is the mind? Manifest action, the action of the mind, that is, virtues, non-virtues, and neutral, etc., the mind has the action of entering. It is said that at this time, just as iron follows a magnet, the mind goes to one-pointedness in samadhi. Equanimity is when abiding, the mind abides in its own nature. Effort is a fault, therefore, one should meditate on it as an antidote to being disturbed by conceptual thoughts. The order of these meditations has been briefly explained. Explaining the method of cultivating insight meditation very briefly. Now, to explain the method of cultivating insight meditation very briefly, it is said that after such calm abiding is accomplished. In the Dharma Abhidhamma, it is said that calm abiding and insight rely on those and become four paths. Some have attained calm abiding, but have not attained insight. They rely on calm abiding and strive for insight. Some have attained insight, but have not attained calm abiding. They rely on insight and strive for calm abiding. Some have not attained calm abiding, nor have they attained insight. They strive for both with a mind that refutes the Dharma and manifestly destroys it. Some have attained both calm abiding and insight. Their place and insight have also become mixed and united. As it is said, it is in the first case. After that, in the Mahayana sutras, as the order of cultivating Prajnaparamita is said, arising from that, with oral instructions, the wise 20-341 Bodhisattva cultivates, this is the connection. Then the actual cultivation is, as it is said, what is insight? Like this, distinguishing all dharmas, extremely distinguishing, completely
