One should make the Bodhisattva dwell in it again and again. It is said that if one is overcome by sleep and drowsiness, so that one is not clear in holding the object of focus and the mind sinks, then one should cultivate the perception of light, and by thinking of the qualities of the most joyful things, such as the Buddha, one should dispel the sinking and firmly grasp that object of focus. It is said. The mind is like a door that is closed, and the wind of discursive thoughts cannot move it. This is from the same source: When one is free from both sinking and excitement, when one abides in equanimity and sees the mind arising naturally, one should relax one's efforts and place it in equanimity. It is said. After being free from sinking and excitement, like a door that is closed, the mind does not move and abides, and abiding in this for a long time is called abiding in equanimity, and calm abiding is accomplished. The benefits are: one does not become disgusted with desires, and one obtains happiness through extreme gentleness. That is, first with the mind of calm abiding accomplished, and second with the body as the main thing, thus it is the meaning of the words. So, what are the nine methods of abiding in the mind and the eight aspects of abandonment? First, in the Adornment of the Lord, it says: The mind is always on the object of focus, do not let it wander in various ways. Having quickly realized the wandering, return to it again and again. From where should the wise person gather the mind? From there, in order to see the qualities, subdue the mind in concentration. Seeing the faults of wandering, one does not like to pacify it. Pride, displeasure, etc., are also extinguished in the same way. Therefore, one who has vows and diligence, his mind is diligently stimulated. One obtains self-arising, not from step by step. These are from the summary of the Abhidharma of the Holy Dharma. What is calm abiding? It is like this: abiding the mind within oneself, continuously abiding, repeatedly abiding, closely abiding, subduing, pacifying, extremely pacifying, focusing on one point, and abiding in equanimity. It is said. The meaning of this is: From the Stages of Meditation on the Nature of the Great Bodhisattva Lotus, it says: What is called abiding is the mind being attached to the object of focus. Continuously

The term "settling" means to constantly settle on that object of focus. The term "gathering and settling" means to recognize distraction and abandon it. The term "near settling" means to abandon distraction and, again and again, conform to and settle on that object of focus. The term "taming" means to generate joy. The term "pacifying" means to see the faults of distraction and, without delight, become extremely pacified. The term "extremely pacifying" means to eliminate the arising of dullness and sleep, and so forth. The term "one-pointed" means to strive to engage without manifest engagement of intention. The term "equanimity" means to practice equanimity when the mind arises; it is a synonym for equanimity. These meanings of these words were explained by the noble Maitreya and the former abbots. It is said that, first, one focuses the mind one-pointedly on the object of focus and settles it. For a while, and at first, one settles the mind on that very thing, and one also maintains equanimity, and one constantly settles without allowing distraction from the object of focus alone. If the mind is distracted, then one recognizes that and again settles it, which is gathering and settling. In order to prevent the mind from scattering outward, one abandons distraction and settles, being mindful from the very beginning, which is near settling. One observes the benefits of samadhi and so forth, and the faults of desire, which is the cause of distraction, and one does not allow the mind to scatter, which is taming. Because the mind is agitated and does not abide, one observes the faults of distraction, which is the cause, and one abandons the lack of delight in settling the mind in equanimity, and one settles in equanimity, which is pacifying. One forgets the object of focus and is distracted from it to other things, and even if excitement and sinking, conceptual thoughts, and so forth manifest, one does not distinguish the occasion and becomes extremely pacified. Then, with diligent mind, one-pointedly, together with manifest engagement of intention, one abandons excitement and sinking as much as possible, and one settles in equanimity as much as possible, making the mind-stream into one. From that, one becomes extremely accustomed, and without effort or manifest engagement of intention, one abides naturally, which is equanimity. The meaning of the words of the previously explained scripture was temporarily established for the sake of illustration. Second, the five faults of samadhi are: laziness and instruction, forgetting and sinking and excitement, and...
