Now, regarding the aspect of transforming afflictions into strength, because of the absence of those (afflictions), it is easy to increase concentration, so it is very blissful. Therefore, it has meanings such as being as pleasant as a drum. Solitary places such as forests, one should say "We afflictions," etc. "The supreme among humans, having gone there, should abide in an upright posture." This means that in that solitary place, one should possess the seven-fold bodily key points of the Venerable Vairochana. This means that what precedes this is the preliminary stage for entering yoga. The method for that is also according to the conduct of the great Acharya Padmasambhava: Thus, abiding in the collections of discipline and so forth, the calm abiding, in a pleasing place, making prostrations and so forth to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, confessing sins, rejoicing in merit, and with only great compassion as the priority, the thought of liberating all beings becomes firm, straightening the body, sitting on a comfortable cushion, assuming the lotus posture, and thereby manifestly accomplishing concentration. One should act accordingly. Thus, abiding in the collections of discipline and so forth, the calm abiding, means that the cause of calm abiding is discipline as a preliminary. Just like this, the home, etc., has been spoken of. The pleasing place is, the forest, etc., has been spoken of. The meaning of Buddha, etc., is that in that solitary place, as previously explained, one should perform the seven-branch offering. Making only great compassion the priority is meditation. The thought of liberating all beings is generating the mind of enlightenment. From then on, straightening the body, etc., shows the bodily key points. Therefore, it is said, "Upright posture," etc. Now, the manifest accomplishment of concentration will be explained. Now, the manifest accomplishment of concentration will be explained here: "The mind of the mind is the object to be grasped." This means that the yogi abides in the place of the inner mind itself, focusing only on the mind, abiding without conceptualization, and prolonging that time, that is, abiding and continuously abiding. Here, the gathering of the senses is, having abandoned dullness and excitement from before, abandoning the cause of conceptual thought, gathering the senses inward, and abiding equally.

One should settle down. When many conceptual thoughts arise, one should pacify them like ocean waves, which is the way to settle down. When many conceptual thoughts arise, one should recognize them and then settle down again in equanimity. If the mind becomes distracted, then one should tame it with mindfulness, which means to pacify and completely pacify. Even if conceptual thoughts arise, do not accept them, and if one forgets and becomes distracted, one should seize it with mindfulness, see the faults in it, and abandon the aversion to not settling down in equanimity and settle down. As the great Kamalaśīla Mahāpuruṣa said in the Stages of Meditation: "When one sees displeasure towards it, one should look at the qualities of samādhi and happily cultivate it, and by looking at the faults of distraction, one should completely pacify displeasure." It is also said: "Remembering the enjoyment of sensual pleasures, etc., at that time, desiring glory and the body, conditioned things are like a fleeting dancer, like seasonal clouds and lightning. Samsara is like a snake swallowing a corpse, alas! I am in a place of distraction." Therefore, contemplating the faults of desire, and the benefits of solitude and meditation after abandoning desire, is taming. As it says in the same text: "If at any time one remembers previous playfulness, etc., and occasionally sees the mind becoming distracted, then one should pacify the distraction by contemplating impermanence and other things that cause aversion." Furthermore, greed, hatred, and delusion, these great enemies of thieves, should be destroyed by the army of loving-kindness, dependent origination, and impure contemplation. For those who are more prone to dullness due to ignorance, and those who are more prone to excitement due to greed, and those who are similar with hatred, one should eliminate them by cultivating dependent origination, loving-kindness, and impurity respectively. In short, one should abandon dullness and excitement, and in order to accomplish the continuity of mind focused on one point, one should generate joy in dullness, and eliminate excitement with impurity and so on. As it is said: "When occasional thoughts of greed and so on scatter outward, one should recognize that the mind has scattered, and pacify the scattering by cultivating impurity and so on, quickly."
