mA tra shi shi bru yat. ardha mA tra na ku la. It is said. When translated into Tibetan, one duration is cATaka. two durations is crow. Three durations, say those with a crest. Half the duration na ku la. It is said that the sounds of those creatures are used as examples. mA tra has often been translated as 'female' in the past, but here it means 'measure'. Because 'measure' might be confused with 'volume', although there is no Sanskrit word for 'duration', it is added for the sake of clarity. It is called 'duration measure'. The translation as 'female' is because mA tra can mean 'mother' or 'ma' in 'father and mother'. Therefore, 'mother' refers to vowels. If one thinks of it as the name of a short vowel, that is fine. But there is no half vowel, and half mA tra occurs. It is said that these are the voiceless consonants. Therefore, translating mA tra as 'female' is not very good. Another distinction is: udAtta, anudAtta, and svarita, these are three. To pronounce the sound loudly and high is udAtta. The middle one is svarita. The low one is anudAtta. Here, these are considered in terms of vowels. Therefore, there are three each for the fourteen, making forty-two here. ai ai o au sandhya kSarANi. ai ai o au are junction letters. Here, some explain it this way: The letter e comes from joining a and i. ai comes from a and e. The letter o comes from a and u. au comes from joining a and o. Therefore, these are called junction letters. Some say that they are arbitrary names and have no etymology. It seems that this is also reasonable. The four, ai ai o au, 19-64 have no short form, so they are only divided into long and very long. Very long is also included in long, so if you combine them, they are just long. ubhaye svarAH. Both are vowels. These two categories of letters, those with similar names and those with junction letter names, are called vowels. Five and four together make nine root vowels. abrajA nAmi naH. Those without a are nAmi. The three letters a are without the vowel i, etc., or the twenty are called nAmi, meaning 'having a name'.

Thus, the order of the vowels has been explained. Now, the order of consonants will be explained. Ha Ya Va Ra La. ༈ Nya Na Na Nga Ma. ༈ Jha Dha Dha Gha Bha. ༈ Ja Da Da Ga Ba. ༈ Kha Pha Tsa Tha Tha. ༈ Tsa Ta Ta Ka Pa. ༈ Sha Sha Sa. ༈ Ādyaṃtābhyāṃ. (梵文天城体, Devanagari: आद्यंताभ्यां, IAST: ādyantābhyāṃ, Literal meaning: From beginning to end). From beginning to end. Letters are divided into groups, and because it is necessary to repeatedly mention the grouping, and different groups have different functions, it is necessary to simplify the letters for easy and quick mention. The so-called "Ha Sa" refers to from Ha to Sa, and is used as a general term for all consonants. The so-called "Tsa Pa" refers to Tsa Ta Ta Ka Pa. ༈ Listing "Jha Bha" separately refers to Jha Dha Dha Gha Bha. ༈ Listing "Ja Ba" separately refers to Ja Da Da Ga Ba. ༈ Listing "Kha Pa" separately refers to Kha Pha Tsa Tha Tha, Tsa Ta Ta Ka Pa. ༈ Listing "Kha Sa" separately refers to Kha Pha Tsa Tha Tha, Tsa Ta Ta Ka Pa, Sha Sha Sa, which is called voiceless in the Kalapa. ༈ Listing "Jha Sa" separately refers to Jha Dha Dha Gha Bha, Ja Da Da Ga Ba, Kha Pha Tsa Tha Tha, Tsa Ta Ta Ka Pa, Sha Sha Sa, which is called dhuṭ in the Kalapa. ༈ Listing "Ha Ba" separately refers to Ha Ya Va Ra La, Nya Na Na Nga Ma, Jha Dha Dha Gha Bha, Ja Da Da Ga, which is called voiced in the Kalapa. Listing "Nya Ma" separately refers to Nya Na Na Nga Ma, which is called nasal in other places. Furthermore, for consonants without Ha Ya, "Kha Sa" can be listed separately. For the first and second letters of each group, removing Ga and Pa, "Tsa Ta" can be listed separately. In the sutra, there are actually only the basics listed separately here, and there are no other consonants, but it is explained in the commentary of this text and in the sutras that appear later. After the vowel arrangement, assuming that "Ha Sa" is placed, listing "A Ba" separately refers to A I U Ṛ Ḷ E AI O AU Ha Ya Va Ra La, Nya Na Na Nga Ma, Jha Dha Dha Gha Bha, Ja Da Da Ga Ba, which is called vowels and voiced in other places. The so-called "Nami" and "Ha" and the "I" at the end are listed separately. These and others, by simplifying the first and last letters, can understand all the letters in between. Regarding these, there is a numerical explanation in the Prakṛiya, but because it can be understood only by listing them separately, it is not necessary to explain the determination of numbers here. ༈ Ha Sa
