Having made a firm resolution, enter into the pure Dharma right now, and persevere until death, without pursuing one's own happiness for the sake of other wishes. For all practitioners nowadays, this antidote is of utmost importance. This completes the guidance on impermanence. The eighth stage of mind training. Thinking About the Suffering of the Lower Realms Third, thinking about the suffering of the lower realms, divided into three: thinking about the suffering of hell, thinking about the suffering of the hungry ghosts, and thinking about the suffering of animals. First is: the preliminary and subsequent practices are as before. I have no power to stay in the human realm for long, and I feel fear when I think of death. Thinking carefully, death itself is not so scary, what is truly scary is being forced to take rebirth involuntarily after death. If I have not done good deeds in life, but have accumulated a lot of evil deeds, I am afraid that I may fall into the three lower realms. This is the gateway to all contemplations on the suffering of the lower realms. Next, think about the suffering of the hot hells. The verse is: Reviving, Black Line, Crushing, Howling, Great Howling, Extreme Heat, Uninterrupted. Among them, the location of all the hot hells is an iron-hot ground without mountains or rivers, where flames constantly burn to a height of about a cubit (a Tibetan unit of length, approximately equal to a span), and everywhere is covered with valleys or deep ravines. There are extremely hot springs of molten copper, molten iron, or molten lead, as well as corrosive sharp salt, and similar waterfalls and lakes. All the trees are also made of red-hot iron and the like. It is filled with ferocious birds, beasts, Rakshasas born from karma, and numerous Yamaraja's servants. It is said that the intermediate beings who are born there are driven by rain and wind, and experience extreme cold. Due to the force of karma, they see the hot hells and think it is warm there, and because of their attachment, they rush towards that place, eventually falling into that place and taking rebirth. Moreover, ordinary fire is seven times hotter than sandalwood fire, and the fire of the Reviving Hell is seven times hotter than sandalwood fire. Similarly, the higher the hell, the hotter it is than the hell below by seven times. All beings in hell have very sharp and agile consciousness and senses, their bodies are soft and tender, full of youthful vitality, and they lack patience in both body and mind. Therefore, the suffering they experience is even more intense. In those places, the face, hands, and all senses

Suddenly, everything is like waking up from a dream. All hells are spontaneously born. Most spontaneously born beings arise in this way. The differences in the various sufferings are that in the Reviving Hell, they see each other as enemies, like seeing cannibals, and generate hatred. Whatever they pick up turns into sharp weapons, and they strike each other, causing their bodies to break into many pieces. They faint and fall as if dead. When the sound "Cool wind, revive!" comes from the sky, they revive. Then, they fight again as before, endlessly suffering in repeated death and revival. In the Black Line Hell, the Yama's minions draw many black lines on the bodies of the hell beings, then saw them apart with saws, chop them with axes, and cut them with sharp weapons, etc. When the top is sawn, the bottom rejoins; when the bottom is sawn, the top rejoins. Thus, time passes without being able to finish. In the Crushing Hell, hell beings are squeezed between large and terrifying animals like sheep, or between rocky mountains, sheep heads, goat heads, buffaloes, and lions, etc., with terrifying appearances. Or they are crushed and destroyed by large mountains from above. Or hell beings are gathered together on many large iron anvils, and crushed and ground with hammers or mallets as large as mountains. When the mountains split or stakes, etc., are lifted, they revive as before. Then, they strike and crush each other again, and their bodies are ground into powder. In the Howling Hell, many terrifying animals chase the hell beings. They see a white house from afar, thinking it is safe there, so they run and enter it. As a result, it turns into an iron house without doors, burning with flames inside and out, with no chance of escape, and they can only howl in pain. The Great Howling Hell is similar, except that the iron house has two stories. Cooking in iron pots, cooking in large copper pots, etc., are also there. In the Hot Hell, the jailers pierce the beings diagonally from the crown of the head to the anus, or from the anus to the crown of the head, with burning iron skewers or sharp short spears, piercing through all the internal organs.
