Life is not to be counted from today; half of it is already gone, or nearly all of it is. Furthermore, due to previous karma, life may not extend beyond thirty or forty years. The Lord of Death seems to have already arrived at the door. Enemies, relatives, wealth, retinue, servants, friends, happiness, suffering, and conversations of this life—when associating with all these for a long time, one will inevitably wonder what to do and what can still be done. As it is said: The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, all these sentient beings burned by fire, even their ashes will not remain, let alone the extremely fragile human. Like that, this accumulation of flesh, blood, and pus is so fragile! The breath is unstable, like autumn mist, and it is uncertain when it will dissipate. Without gaining control over the mind, there is no confidence in anything, so it is uncertain when one will die. As it is said: It is not right to remain complacent just because one does not die today; when I am about to disappear, that will surely happen, and it cannot be prevented. Meditate like this. Nagarjuna said: The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. Those very causes of life are also causes of death, therefore, always accumulate Dharma. Like that, external causes include sentient beings such as humans, animals, and spirits; cliffs, fire, and water belong to the external environment and the elements. Internal causes include four hundred and four types of diseases, etc. In short, there is nothing that the causes of death cannot do. What is considered the cause of life—food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc.—can also become the cause of death if the food is unsuitable or the medicine is wrong. Being in the midst of adverse conditions like a fierce blizzard attacking the body and life, one should meditate, thinking, 'I do not know when I will die.' The sixth object of focus.\ The third point is to contemplate that at the time of death, things that are not Dharma are absolutely useless. As Shantideva said: When one is seized by the messengers of Yama, what use are relatives? What use are friends? Like that, at the time of death, even if there is much wealth, one has no right to take even a sesame seed. Relatives, friends, servants, retinue, lords, officials, etc., even if their roots are deep, one has no right to take even the lowest servant or a single child. Nor does one have the right to follow him; all of this is the nature of separation.

Thinking that even the land is of no help, cultivate a feeling of disgust. Treat enemies, friends, happiness, suffering, good words, and bad words all the same. Then, thinking, if I don't follow these, who will I follow? Follow the two, good and bad, karmas that I have accumulated. The sins that have already been committed cannot be left behind and always bring harm. Whatever good deeds are accumulated will benefit me, but will not remain behind. The Dharma-rich Rabjor also said: "Except for good and evil, all beings will turn away from you. No one will follow you. Know this and contemplate it well." Thinking as he said. Since this is the case, one will certainly die, die quickly, and it is uncertain when one will die. At the time of death, nothing else is of any help. The only thing that can benefit from the time of death onwards, through endless lifetimes, is the sacred Dharma. One should strive to practice the Dharma right now! Think like this. The seventh contemplation. Now cultivate this teaching on the impermanence of death, which is called the five root words. First, contemplate that one does not stay, but changes. Second, contemplate that many others have died. Third, repeatedly contemplate the many causes of death. Fourth, contemplate how one will be at the time of death. Fifth, contemplate how one will be after death. What needs to be done is that from the time we are born until we die, this continuum of the body is always changing and passing away. I was like that when I was a small child, like that in childhood, like that in youth, and now I think like this. Getting closer and closer to death. Control the mind and rest in a strong sense of renunciation. We recall that until now, such and such a person in this place has also died, and such and such a person in that place has also died, counting them one by one in detail. Think about how many people older than oneself have died, and how many of the same age and younger have died. There are more dead than alive now. Those people did not all die after reaching the end of their lifespan. Most died untimely, in the bardo. I am also of such a nature, and cannot transcend such a nature. It is very fortunate that I have not gone among those people before. It is impossible not to practice genuine Dharma before dying, think like this. Have you heard or seen other people or animals die? Have you seen the changes in age from child to old age? There is no non-death.

Sometimes the strong become weak, the weak become strong, the rich become poor, and so on. Whatever you see or hear, clearly remember impermanence. I or my relatives, my possessions, etc., are also of this nature, also of this law. Think like this. Then, as before, thinking of the many causes of death, for all things that appear before you, think: I don't know how these things will become the cause of my death. Now I don't even know what will become of myself. At the time of death, if one dies with an unwholesome mind, there will be terrible suffering like beheading, etc. Death does not come when you want it or are happy, it falls suddenly even when you don't want it. You don't die happily or joyfully, but die with intense suffering. You don't have any knowledge of the next world, but go to an unfamiliar, strange land. Thinking that after I die, the body and mind will separate, this body will either be buried in the ground and become a pile of worms; or thrown into the water and become food for fish and otters; or burned in the fire and become a handful of ashes; or thrown on a mountain or plain and eaten by birds and dogs, and eventually after a few days not even a trace will remain. The body that is so cherished now will end up like this. The mind, carrying the burden of karma, must go to a place where it is not certain where it will be reborn. Is there still a way not to practice Dharma now? 18-218 Is there still a way to postpone it until later? Think like this. Summarizing these, just as you now have the armor to practice true Dharma, you must persevere in the Dharma from beginning to end, and happily spend your life, so that everyone will enviously say, "He practiced true Dharma," and thereby seek a goal to entrust yourself to. For this, you must practice Dharma, gain stability, and become accustomed to it. If you do not gain stability, and if you encounter misfortune, your mind will not be able to control it, you will not be able to persevere in the Dharma, you will contradict the Dharma, you will regret it yourself, and everyone will blame you, and there is a danger of such a miserable death. So you can't do that.
