All arising thoughts of attachment and aversion, directly look at the nature of where they arise. The previous experience of meditating on the unreality of all phenomena will increase, and it will naturally subside, which is called near pacification. For a while, this easily distracted mind needs to be repeatedly tamed by these methods. Afterwards, if one can focus the mind, there will be no faults of dullness and agitation, and the mind will be able to abide in the state of emptiness for a long time. At this time, it is necessary to focus, which is the method of focusing the mind on one object. Eventually, just by remembering the previous experience of the view, one can make the state of emptiness last for a long time. At this time, one should relax the effort and let the mind abide naturally, so that the so-called abiding in reality is accomplished. This method of cultivation comes from the Abhidharma, and it is one of the Shamatha cultivation methods that rely on Vipassanā. This is the same as the view of Śāntarakṣita's Bodhipathapradīpa and other treatises, which is a non-conceptual meditation method that first conducts observation and analysis. Geshe Potowa's "Vase Treatise" says that Atiśa's teachings only need to be analyzed first. However, in some of Atiśa's mind-training teachings and other Sutra teachings, as well as many Tantric teachings such as Mahamudra, there are also many teachings that abandon observation and analysis. But here, when explaining the key points of the Stages of the Path, one must do as Geshe Potowa said. There are thirty-three objects of focus. When the mind of this type of contemplation is established, Vipassanā will also be accomplished. Therefore, they believe that from the beginning, Shamatha and Vipassanā should be practiced in union. Third is the essence of emptiness and compassion: merely practicing emptiness cannot accomplish Prajñāpāramitā, so emptiness and compassion must be practiced in union. In this way, in the ultimate truth, all phenomena included in appearance and samsara are not established, like space. If one can directly realize that established phenomena are actually not established, then there are no sentient beings who experience suffering, no suffering to be experienced, and no phenomena of the three: afflictions, karma, and suffering, rotating from one to another, arising from the way of experiencing. However, even so

Once realization dawns, the appearance of sentient beings who experience suffering also arises, the appearance of suffering to be experienced also arises, and the way of experiencing and the way of wandering also arise. All of that appears even though it doesn't exist, and like sentient beings deceived by illusion, experiencing various sufferings, it is truly pitiful. May these awaken from delusion and be placed in the Buddha who realizes the true nature. Ultimately, neither the self is established, nor are those sentient beings established. Delusion is also not established, and the path that dispels delusion is also not established. However, in the conventional delusion, it appears as if suffering and obscurations exist. Similarly, the path also appears to exist. By meditating on the path, delusion is dispelled, and one naturally abides in the state of a Buddha who abides in the true nature. Like an illusion, the self teaches sentient beings who are like illusions the path or Dharma that is like an illusion. May those who are exhausted by suffering that is like an illusion be liberated into the expanse. Suffering, what is experienced, and the experiencer are all not truly established, and it is impossible for any phenomenon of appearance and sound to be truly established. However, if we exhaustively investigate, even if there could be truly established suffering, there is no greater suffering to experience than experiencing this non-true suffering. 18-281 If one realizes that this does not exist, one could be naturally liberated, but it is pitiful that one does not realize this. One should repeatedly contemplate and meditate. The sixty-four objects of focus. Now, to enhance its power, spend one day meditating only on emptiness, one day meditating only on compassion, and one day meditating on the union of emptiness and compassion from before. By doing this repeatedly, the power will increase. Sometimes, meditate on emptiness alone in one session, meditate on compassion alone in one session, and meditate on the union of emptiness and compassion in one or two sessions. By doing this repeatedly from time to time, the power will also increase. One session is enough. Now, there is a saying about dispelling obstacles to this. Emptiness and compassion in union is the core of practice. To this, obstacles of attachment to the happiness of this life arise. Do you want to have greater enjoyment, pleasant words, and powerful eloquence in this life? Also, do you hope that others will regard you as a good practitioner? Do you hope to be superior to others?
