Thus thinking, it seems that there is no establishment in reality at all. This is the object of focus, which is called "I" or "self." If it exists in reality, then it would be the self of a person. Since such a thing is not established at all, such a self of a person cannot be pointed out from the perspective of its own nature. However, if we follow the way of grasping and presuming the self-grasping that grasps what does not exist as existing, then it is grasped as permanent, single, and independent. For example, "Last year I did this, now I am doing this," thinking like that. The "I" of last year is this "I" of now. "This will go again now," that is called grasping as permanent. When the thought of "I" arises, it appears as if it has its own independent nature that is not mixed with any other external or internal things, that is grasping as single. Just as one enjoys with reason, or as possessions or retinues exist as if one is the owner, that is called grasping as independent. Although the way of grasping is to grasp in that way, such a thing is not established. If the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanized: ātman, literal meaning: self) is permanent, then if the self experiences happiness once, it should always be happy; if it experiences suffering once, it should always suffer. If one is initially bound in samsara, then there is no possibility of later liberation; if one is in a state of later liberation, then one has not experienced samsara before. Therefore, alternating between happiness and suffering, and the states of being bound and liberated each arise separately, thus it is determined that there is no permanent self. Being single is also unreasonable, because the so-called self seems to exist in the aggregates of one's own body and mind. The eye is not the self, nor are the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind the self. If each of those were the self, then it would become many. If each one is not the self, then the self cannot be found. Furthermore, if the self is the aggregates, then the self becomes impermanent. If the self is different from the aggregates, then when the eye consciousness sees something, the self also sees; when the body touches something, the self also touches, the arising of such an idea is contradictory. Therefore, the "I" self with a single nature is not established. Because being single is not established, being independent is also not established. Especially since all actions are manifestly seen to depend on conditions, an independent self is impossible. Furthermore, the self is not established outside of the aggregates either. The self does not exist within the aggregates either. Each aggregate is also not the self. Removing the aggregates...

Even in the collection, there is no self. In the generality of the aggregates, there is also no self, because there is no generality that is separate from each individual part. Therefore, what is called "self" is merely a conceptual imputation, merely an illusion, merely a reversal. Meditate that there is absolutely no inherently existent essence. This is the thirty-third point of focus. 18-273 When meditating on the selflessness of persons, it is permissible to divide the points of focus into several sections in accordance with the capacity of the mind. Now, the selflessness of phenomena is taught, and "phenomena" refers to the aggregates, elements, and sense-spheres. If these were not merely conceptual imputations, but rather if there could be a thing that is able to exist independently, then that would be the self of phenomena. However, such a thing is utterly impossible, so all phenomena are without a self of phenomena. Even so, in order to purify the conceptual thoughts that, from beginningless samsara, grasp the aggregates, elements, and sense-spheres as being inherently existent, it is necessary to meditate on the selflessness of phenomena. In that regard, first it is necessary to meditate on the aggregates of one's own continuum as being without inherent existence. Furthermore, first, looking at the phenomena of the body, the form aggregate included in one's own continuum, it seems as if various things are gathered together, and one imputes a general name, "body," to one thing, and then one thinks that there is a thing that corresponds to the name. Other than being seized by a reversed mind, it is not established in that way. First, in this body, the faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body are also different. The physical bases, which are the supports of the faculties and are not the same as the faculties, are also each separate. The head, neck, chest, back, waist, stomach, abdomen, two shoulders, two arms, two elbows, two hands, two hips, two thighs, two feet, and the internal organs such as the five solid organs and six hollow organs, and the nine apertures, and so forth, are a collection of various things, one should think. Therefore, what is called "body" is merely a conceptual imputation, and is not truly existent. If each of those were the body, then it would become many bodies. If each is not the body, then the body is not found. If one thinks that it is merely a collection, since there is no collection that is separate from each individual part, it is gone, being nothing other than a conceptual imputation. This is the thirty-fourth point of focus. Furthermore, this body, which is included in the form aggregate, is not truly established. The four limbs, the upper and lower parts,
