To those who claim to be Mahayana practitioners but cannot endure, one should firmly rebuke them with antidotal force, thinking, "How foolish!" Enduring with genuine devotion to the Dharma refers to being able to comprehend and understand profound methods, the distinctions of skillful means, as well as great deeds, boundless qualities, and the unelaborated reality, without any incomprehension. It also refers to being able to abide in emptiness for a long time. Now, in this context, contemplate that all harm and suffering are like illusions, like dreams, appearing without being truly existent. Then, what is there to be unable to endure? Practice in this way. This is the forty-eighth point of mind training. Now, one must also train in the perfection of diligence, which has three aspects: armor-like diligence, applying diligence, and irreversible diligence. Armor-like diligence refers to not having contempt, thinking, "There's no need to do such things" for all virtuous Dharmas, nor having the timid thought, "I can't accomplish as much as great beings." Instead, one resolves, "I must accomplish all of these, and I am capable of it. I will do it right now, and I will do it continuously." This joy and unyielding courage towards virtue, connected with a firm commitment of mind, is armor-like diligence. Apply this to your own mindstream and contemplate it repeatedly. Applying diligence refers to, when actually engaging in practice, not being controlled by laziness and distraction, but immediately engaging in virtue with joy, and continuing it with the same joy. Irreversible diligence refers to not losing joy, even if warmth signs and benefits do not appear immediately. No matter how long it takes, or how much hardship one must endure, one does not turn back from the initial commitment until the result is achieved. Furthermore, some pith instructions of the Stages of the Path say, "Diligence of the body is prostrations and circumambulations, etc.; diligence of speech is recitations and verbal repetitions, etc.; diligence of mind is joy and diligence towards virtue in general, and especially towards this Dharma." Therefore, in any case, if diligence is these, then I too shall possess diligence. Without being controlled by laziness and procrastination, I shall generate joy in virtue. Contemplate in this way.

The forty-ninth round (of contemplation). Now, there is also the perfection of meditation to be done, and its causes and conditions must be present now. The cause of samadhi requires a solitary mind. Its cause requires a solitary body. Its cause requires few affairs and few activities. Its cause requires few desires and contentment. Its cause requires contentment with meager food, clothing, lodging, and bedding. If I myself have wealth, I will not be attached to it, but will practice samadhi. If I do not have wealth, then not having wealth itself is good, because there is no obstacle to the Dharma. Think and meditate again and again, being content with whatever arises. In this way, the cause of samadhi is fulfilled. The fiftieth round (of contemplation). In reality, if meditation is classified, there are many different ways of classifying it. The so-called "meditation of abiding in bliss in this life" refers to accomplishing the bliss of body and mind being extremely subdued. The so-called "meditation of accomplishing qualities" refers to accomplishing clairvoyance and magical powers, etc., from the general and specific aspects. The so-called "meditation of benefiting sentient beings" refers to blessing the minds of others by relying on the power of samadhi, or benefiting sentient beings by relying on the special abilities of clairvoyance. All of these require relying on a calm abiding that is free from faults and complete with characteristics. I must first place my mind equally on calm abiding. Then, I must repeatedly meditate, accomplishing all other qualities of samadhi. The fifty-first round (of contemplation). At this time, it would be excellent to explain the classification of calm abiding in detail and to have certainty about it. 18-270 Although it is appropriate to show the guidance of calm abiding here, it is only to gain certainty about the view and to gain experience. It is permissible even without stable calm abiding, or after having well accomplished stable calm abiding, then cultivating the view and practicing vipassana, which is the intention and main path of all the great treatises. However, for the dull-witted individuals of today, it takes a long time to accomplish a faultless and stable mind-abiding, so there is concern that the opportunity to practice the Prajnaparamita will be lost. If mind-abiding is practiced on top of gaining experience of the view, then calm abiding and insight will be accomplished simultaneously, thus guiding students.
