Experiencing Suffering Thinking of these beings also evokes compassion. If a delusion arises, think, "Oh dear, what is really the best thing to do?" For example, if one's own root mother is blind in her eyes, lame in her legs, has no guide, and has lost her support, and is about to fall off a cliff, what should I do? Without looking at anything else, I would rush over and grab my mother from the cliff. Similarly, these old mother beings have blind eyes of wisdom, lame legs of skillful means, no guide of virtuous friends or good companions, and are separated from the support of merit. They repeatedly engage in all kinds of sins that are unbearable to even think about. They are knocked off the path to higher realms and are about to fall into the abyss of the three lower realms. 18-257 These beings who dwell in unbearable causes of suffering are truly pitiable. Now, I must find a way to actually save them from suffering. Therefore, in the three lower realms, the primary experience is actual suffering, and in the three higher realms, the primary experience is the cause of suffering. One should remember their suffering as described in the stages of the small and middling persons. If that suffering were to befall me, even a small part of it would be unbearable. How can they endure what I cannot endure? They are actually experiencing such suffering and are gradually accumulating endless causes of suffering. Suffering arises continuously, these beings are truly pitiable. May they be free from all suffering, may they be free from the causes of suffering—karma and afflictions. I must save these old mother six realms beings from sin and all suffering, and I must liberate them from the suffering of samsara, I must think this repeatedly. The thirty-ninth practice. Alternatively, for this, focusing on actual suffering is one practice, focusing on the cause of suffering is one practice, and combining the two into one practice is also a method, making three in total. As mentioned earlier in the section on loving-kindness, it is also good to gradually expand to all beings and cultivate in that way. Or, after practicing the guidance of loving-kindness and compassion once, connect these two.
