Some devas are very poor, having nothing but a lute. When they see other wealthy devas, they become disheartened with their own merit and experience immeasurable mental suffering. In particular, the suffering of fighting with the asuras is very great in the realms of the Four Great Kings and the Thirty-three. All the devas of the desire realm share the suffering of death and falling. For them, seven days before death, five signs of death appear: the color of the body becomes unsightly, the mind becomes depressed and dislikes the seat, the garlands of flowers become old, black stains appear on the clothes, and sweat comes from the body. When these appear, their servants and friends, both male and female, abandon them and go to other devas. They know that they will inevitably be separated from the pleasures of the devas, even though they are attached to them. There is no way to prevent it. Suffering arises like a yak cow losing its calf, a naga being carried away by a garuda, a fish being covered with sand, or a ship sinking in the middle of the great ocean. The duration is seven days for the devas, but even if we consider the shortest lifespan of the Four Great Kings, it is four hundred and fifty years (in human years). The most terrible thing is that the suffering of falling means that after the devas die, the possibility of being reborn as a deva is very rare, and the possibility of being reborn as a human is also very small. Most are born in the lower realms. As it is said: If one transmigrates from the world of the gods, if there is no remainder of virtue, then one will involuntarily be born as an animal, a hungry ghost, or in any of the hells. Because the devas have clairvoyance, they know where they will be born at the time of death. Even if they are born as humans, they are not satisfied with desires and see endless suffering. If they are born in the three lower realms, knowing that they must endure the suffering there, unbearable mental suffering arises in their hearts. I think that the mental suffering is greater than the physical suffering of the three lower realms. The twenty-seventh chapter. Then, if one is born as a deva in a higher realm, is there happiness? If you think so, there is no happiness there either.

Those, in the upper realms, although ordinary beings do not see obvious suffering, 18-242 But when seen by the noble ones, it is not beyond the nature of the suffering of conditioning, like being drunk with samadhi, ordinary beings have no increase in merit, indulging in the taste of samadhi, they cannot bear to abandon this flavorful samadhi, and therefore some die from the loss of their respective samadhis. Especially, all the ordinary beings living there, when the karma of their past actions is exhausted, they are reborn in the desire realm again. In the past, when they practiced worldly samadhi on the human body, and at that time, practicing formless samadhi, it seemed comfortable and leisurely, but without any confidence, they did not degenerate into ordinary people, but instead suffered greatly from the intensity of their afflictions. What is the point of such actions? So I thought. The twenty-eighth contemplation is complete. Second, thinking that all of samsara is suffering, the preliminaries are the same as before, starting from the suffering in the hell realm, and thinking of the suffering of hungry ghosts, animals, humans, asuras, gods of the desire realm, and gods of the form and formless realms, all the three realms of samsara are three sufferings, six sufferings, or eight sufferings, etc., which are the nature of suffering, the fullness of suffering, and the surrounding of suffering. Suffering burns like fire, churns like water, wanders like wind, and presses like a mountain. Wherever one dwells is a place of suffering, whatever body one takes is a body of suffering, whoever one befriends is a friend of suffering, and whatever one enjoys is an enjoyment of suffering. Suffering also has three aspects, called the suffering of suffering, which is all the suffering of feelings such as heat, cold, and disease. Called the suffering of change, which is all the happiness of feelings, such as life and enjoyment, even the happiness of meditation. Called the suffering of conditioning, which is the basis of these two sufferings, the aggregate of taking and receiving conditioning, this is all suffering.
