By doing these, one will have a good appearance; by not being arrogant and being respectful to the lama and fellow practitioners, one will have a noble birth; by giving whatever is desired to those who beg from the fields of benefit, fields of suffering, fields of merit, etc., one will be wealthy and enjoy abundance; by only speaking virtuous words, one will have honest speech; by making offerings to the lama, the Three Jewels, parents, etc., and by making aspirations to accomplish various qualities, one will have great power; by delighting in sentient beings and protecting them from being castrated, one will be reborn as a male; by helping others in their Dharma-abiding activities without expecting anything in return, one will obtain perfect strength and be able to accomplish these things accordingly. This is the twenty-first contemplation. Up to this point, the stages of the lesser person are complete. Training in the stages common to the intermediate person. Second, training the mind in the thoughts common to the intermediate person, which includes contemplating the cause and effect of samsara and contemplating the cause and effect of liberation. Contemplating the cause and effect of samsara. First, contemplating the result of samsara—suffering, and contemplating the divisions of the cause—the origin of suffering. Contemplating the result of samsara—suffering. First, contemplating the suffering of higher realms and contemplating the general suffering of samsara. First, one should perform the three practices of prostration, offering, and confession in a slightly more elaborate manner, and then precede them with the seven-branch prayer and taking refuge. Because of my karma, I will take birth in the six realms. If I am born in the three lower realms, the suffering will be like that. If I am born in the human realm, I might think it is happy, but it is not, because most humans are born from the womb. One must stay in the womb for nine or ten months. In the womb, there are always three kinds of suffering: the suffering of narrowness, the suffering of darkness, and the suffering of unpleasant smells. When the mother is hungry, it is like being swallowed by a cliff; when she stands, it is like being pressed by a board; when she eats and drinks warm food, it is like being cooked in a hot spring; when she eats and drinks cold food, it is like being thrown into an ice cave. When one is born from the womb, it is like being pressed between the wood of a sesame oil press.

There is suffering like being naked, and like all the joints being scattered and destroyed. When newly born, whatever is touched is rough, even if wrapped in soft silk, it is like being thrown into a thorn bush, and when taken into the hands of others, there is suffering like being carried away by a bird's claws. We just don't remember it now. If we remember, we don't need anything else, just thinking about the suffering of birth alone, we would feel that there is no meaning in being born as a human. We must practice a Dharma that does not take birth in samsara due to our own karma. The suffering of human birth, the suffering of being born from the womb, is like that. In general, wherever one is born in the three realms, there is suffering. Wherever one is born in any of the six realms, there is suffering. However one is born, there is suffering, possessing five aspects of suffering. That is, the so-called birth is accompanied by suffering, one must be born with intense feelings. The so-called birth is accompanied by a bad situation, one must be born in a situation that has the seeds of arising and increasing afflictions. The so-called birth becomes a place of suffering, because after birth, other sufferings such as aging, sickness, and death arise. The so-called birth becomes a place of affliction, because after taking birth, encountering conditions, many afflictions arise, and thereby accumulate various kinds of karma. The so-called birth itself is painful because it is involuntarily destroyed, because birth itself is destroyed moment by moment. Therefore, one should contemplate that birth is suffering. This is the twenty-second object of focus. Furthermore, people also have the suffering of aging. At the time of aging, there are five sufferings of decline. The so-called decline of complexion means that the beautiful skin color and luster all disappear, becoming an unsightly blackish-purple or bluish-gray. The hair turns white like peacock feathers, and all the senses lose their luster. The so-called decline of form means that the teeth fall out, the body becomes bent, the limbs become twisted, the flesh becomes dry, the skin becomes loose, and the face is filled with wrinkles like an old cushion, making it unsightly no matter where one looks. The so-called decline of power means that when standing up, one needs to use all four limbs for support, when walking, one staggers, when sitting down, one sits like a kite with a broken string, and when speaking, one mumbles and so on. The so-called decline of the senses means that the eyes cannot see clearly and the ears cannot hear clearly.
