Napo escapes. Like 18-227 that, the suffering is extremely heavy. Most pretas can live for fifteen thousand years, so contemplate for a long time, and the conclusion and subsequent actions are the same as before. The thirteenth contemplation sequence. Even if not included there, there is a tradition of doing a contemplation sequence for these scattered pretas wandering in the sky. If so, because harming others leads to falling into the lower realms again, even unintentionally, others will be harmed by the great poison, they will be beaten by strongmen, and when innocent people are framed, it is said that there will be inner pain, etc. Even if this contemplation sequence is not done separately, it is fine to include it in the previous one. Third, contemplate the suffering of animals: Animals have two types, whole and scattered. The whole ones live in the great ocean, with no place of refuge, driven by the waves, wandering aimlessly. They devour each other, always fearing the appearance of enemies, and are terrified. Being eaten alive, etc., makes the suffering unbearable. The scattered ones are those that exist in the realms of humans and gods. Those not possessed by humans are always without peace of mind, fearing the appearance of enemies. Those possessed by humans also suffer from matted hair, nose piercing, beating, heavy burdens, etc., and being slaughtered for meat, blood, skin, and bones, etc., there are many sufferings of slaughter, cutting, and exploitation. In addition, there are hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, etc., which are similar to the sufferings of hell or pretas. The main 18-228 The main cause of suffering is extreme ignorance and devouring each other, like guarding against enemies coveting human flesh, one must always be vigilant. The basis and conclusion of the contemplation are the same as before, and the preliminaries and afterwards are also the same as before. The fourteenth contemplation sequence. In the common Dharma that summarizes those points, when contemplating the suffering of the three lower realms in that way, there is no way to endure it. Therefore, a protector is needed to save from that. Who can save? Brahma or Indra or a Chakravartin king cannot save.

If one can, how can all these others do it? Then who can do it? The Three Jewels can do it. I take refuge in the Guru, the Lord, the Three Precious Jewels, requesting the Buddha to be the teacher, requesting practice from the Dharma, and thinking of the Sangha as the companions who accomplish it. Furthermore, although one takes refuge in the Buddha, it is the Dharma that protects. Even the Buddha cannot protect one like grabbing the hair of a person being carried away by water. Only by teaching the Dharma and allowing people to act according to the Dharma can one protect. One should cultivate faith in the Buddha and act as the Dharma spoken by him says. We should constantly think of emulating how the noble Sangha acts. It is crucial to accomplish all the recitations and virtuous practices related to taking refuge at the beginning and end of each session. The pure refuge of the Lesser Being arises from this point. Thus advised, this is the fifteenth guided meditation. At this time, it is very important to clearly explain the rough meaning of taking refuge to the students, and the students should also keep it in mind. In some old Lamrim texts, the stage of the Lesser Being ends there. There is also a way to simplify the treatment of karma and its effects. However, according to the custom of most Lamrim texts, it is better to have a separate guidance on karma and its effects. Reflecting on Karma and its Effects. Fourth, the guidance on karma and its effects: It is divided into thinking about karma and its effects in general and thinking about them in particular. The first is the general thought: White karma, virtuous deeds, will only produce the result of happiness. Black karma, evil deeds, will only produce the result of suffering. Since the results of black and white karma are certain, one must adopt and abandon accordingly. Whether it is virtuous or evil karma, the cause is small at the time of the action, but the result increases greatly at the time of fruition. Even the smallest increase will increase a hundredfold or a thousandfold. For large increases, there is no measure, so adopting and abandoning is very important. If the black and white karma that one has done is not destroyed by the opponent force, it will not disappear until the fruit ripens. If one has not done it, no black or white karma can arise in one's own mindstream. Therefore, one should carefully consider the places of adopting and abandoning.
