That river of boundlessness, tormented by extreme heat, Seeing a river flowing in the distance, they went there and jumped in without hesitation, That was a river of mingled fire and water, extremely hot, deep, and wide. When the body sank into the water, it was scorched so intensely that flesh and bones separated, The flesh floated up, life remained in the bones, turning into a skeleton, which floated to the surface. Immediately, the flesh grew back as before, and it sank again, and so on. Although they do not have a fixed lifespan, they must each remain for hundreds of thousands of years, so the suffering is intense and lasts a long time. The basis of visualization and the conclusion are the same as before. The eleventh contemplation. Now we should contemplate the suffering of the ephemeral hells. Their location is uncertain, located underground and above ground, in mountains, plains, rivers, and so on. The lifespan is also uncertain; some are even longer than the fundamental hells, while others are very short. The ways of experiencing suffering are also uncertain and varied. The sutras say: experiencing the bliss of the gods during the day and the suffering of hell at night, and so on. Hells are like cushions, like walls, like mortars, like troughs, like trees, like brooms, and so on. The shapes of the bodies are also uncertain and varied. The basis of visualization and the conclusion are the same as before. The twelfth contemplation. At these times, one should also generate certainty through the biographies of Kadampa Geshes and Phakpa Gedun Drub, and so on. Second, contemplating the suffering of the pretas. The preliminary and the basis of visualization are as before. Again, think like this: I have not been reborn in hell. If I were reborn as a preta, would there be happiness? There is no happiness there either, because there are two types of pretas: those who dwell and those who wander. The first is in the preta city called Serkya, five hundred yojanas below the ground, where the kingdom of Yama, the Lord of Dharma, the chief of all pretas, is located. Near it dwell countless pretas. The wandering pretas wander in the sky, wander on the ground, and wander underground, in countless numbers. If someone with clairvoyance were to look, wherever they went, they would find pre

The realm of the pretas is all-pervasive, to the extent that even a place to stand or stay is difficult to find. Among these pretas, a very few with great magical powers are slightly happier, but all the rest are extremely miserable. The Great Discourse on Mindfulness states that there are thirty-six kinds of pretas. If we categorize them, they can be grouped into three types: pretas with external obstructions, pretas with internal obstructions, and pretas with obstructions to food and drink. Pretas with external obstructions cannot find food or drink for many years. They may see a pile of food from afar, but when they approach it, they find that even the traces have disappeared. When they go to the bank of a great river, it turns into gravel and sand pits. When they approach a tree laden with fruit, the tree turns into a dry stump, and so on. Some pretas are also guarded by many rakshasas who do not allow them to approach. Pretas with internal obstructions have mouths that become as small as the eye of a needle, so that food and drink cannot enter their mouths at first. Even if a little gets in, the food falls into their wide cheeks. Drinks are dried up by the great poison in their mouths. Even if they manage to swallow food and drink, their throats are as thin as a bowstring, so they cannot pass through. Even if it passes through, their stomachs are as big as mountains, so they never feel full. Pretas with obstructions to food and drink find that whatever they eat turns into a burning fire in their stomachs, burning them to ashes. Or from the beginning, they can only eat impure things such as ashes, feces, pus, and blood, which only bring suffering, and they cannot find any good food at all. In general, all pretas constantly suffer unbearable hunger and thirst. They have no clothes to cover themselves and are tormented by heat and cold, and their suffering is immeasurable. In the cold winter, even the sunlight brings a feeling of cold. In the hot summer, even the moonlight brings a feeling of burning. When it rains, fire rains down, bringing a feeling of burning. They are always busy searching for food, exhausted and weary, and their bodies become like withered trees. Three hundred and sixty bones and joints rub against each other, making a sound like stones rubbing together, and flames lick at them. Because they are enemies of each other, they also face the fear of being caught, bound, beaten, and cut to pieces. In short, they wander around like blind people, without a moment of peace, and are always filled with fear.
