Although it is emptiness, it does not necessarily have to be empty of its own nature. It is called emptiness because wisdom itself is empty of all elaborations or grasping and being grasped that have characteristics other than itself. Among these, there are three natures: the completely imputed, the dependent, and the thoroughly established. The completely imputed refers to all unreal things such as space, the appearances of objects such as forms that appear in conceptual thought, the relationship between name and meaning where names are clung to as meanings and meanings are mistaken for names, and all objects of grasping that are fabricated by the mind, such as inner and outer, ends and middles, large and small, good and bad, directions and times. The dependent refers to mere consciousness that appears as the reality of grasping and being grasped. It appears because it has become dependent on the habitual tendencies of ignorance. The thoroughly established refers to that which is self-aware, self-luminous, and free from all elaborations. That is, the nature of phenomena, the realm of phenomena, suchness, and ultimate truth are all synonyms. Among these, the dependent and the completely imputed are the same in being unreal, the same in being mistaken appearances, and the same in being conventional and false. However, their individual characteristics must be distinguished. The completely imputed does not exist even conventionally, the dependent exists conventionally, and the thoroughly established does not exist conventionally but exists ultimately, so it exists truly. Similarly, the completely imputed exists by imputation, the dependent exists substantially, and the thoroughly established does not exist as either of those two, but exists as non-elaboration. The completely imputed is the emptiness of non-existence, the dependent is the emptiness of existence, and the thoroughly established is ultimate emptiness. The Lord said: Knowing the emptiness of non-existence, likewise knowing the emptiness of existence, knowing the emptiness of self-nature, it is called knowing emptiness. The completely imputed is the absence of inherent existence of characteristics, the dependent is the absence of inherent existence of arising, and the thoroughly established is the absence of inherent existence of ultimate truth. Self-nature is of three kinds. Relying on the three absences of inherent existence, all phenomena are shown to be without self-nature. According to this system, all knowable things are pervaded by emptiness and pervaded by the absence of inherent existence. Therefore, asserting that all phenomena are empty and that all phenomena are not empty is the other-emptiness school, not self-emptiness.

In the so-called system of fame, there is an internal contradiction. Therefore, the pure self-emptiness taught by the Buddha is this that abides in conventional self-emptiness. The absence of inherent existence is also these three, so those who speak of self-emptiness without error, and those who speak of the absence of inherent existence, are definitely those who speak of other-emptiness. Like Lekden and Buddhapālita, who are known as speaking of self-emptiness and the absence of inherent existence, this is mainly based on the speech of ordinary worldly people. If the perfectly established were truly established, would it have the three: arising, abiding, and ceasing? Would it have going, coming, change, one and many in direction and time, etc.? The answer is no, for if those existed, it would pervade non-truth. This is without arising, without ceasing, without abiding; without going, without coming; not one, not many; not cause, not effect; having abandoned the three: name, sign, and basis, by its own nature; being separate from all directions and times; being unrelated to the nature of conventional phenomena by its own nature. Because it has no parts that can be divided into different pieces, it is partless. Because it is the nature of nature, it is all-pervading and all-encompassing. Second, the uncommon meaning. The Ornament of the Sutras says: "The Suchness is in all, Though without difference, it is pure. Therefore, the Thus-gone One's own nature, All beings possess its essence." This means that the Suchness and the Thus-gone One are of one essence, and that itself is the essence of the Thus-gone One. The terms Thus-gone One's essence, Sugata-essence, and Buddha-essence have the same meaning. Although it abides in the nature of phenomena such as Buddhas and sentient beings with equality, it abides in sentient beings in the manner of an essence, and it abides in Buddhas in the manner of manifestation. Therefore, the ultimate Buddha himself is like an essence in the center of the mindstream of sentient beings. Therefore, all sentient beings are called possessors of the Thus-gone One's essence. That Sugata-essence also exists in sentient beings, and that of sentient beings is also called the naturally abiding lineage and element. Therefore, the Suchness does not abide in Buddhas in the manner of an essence, but it abides in sentient beings in the manner of an essence, so there are two Suchnesses.
