Collected Teachings of Tāranātha JT367: The Essence of Other-Emptiness 18-150 ༄༅། །The Essence of Other-Emptiness ༄། །A General Presentation of Tenets ༄༅། །The Essence of Other-Emptiness ༄༅། །Oṃ Svasti! Here, the nature of the Great Vehicle's definitive meaning Madhyamaka should be ascertained, namely, a general presentation of tenets, an ascertainment of Madhyamaka, and a refutation of extremes imputed by others to it. Firstly, the philosophical views of non-Buddhist schools are separate from the path of liberation, while the philosophical views of our own Buddhist school are connected to the path of liberation. Although non-Buddhists do not have a path to liberation, they do have the teachings of higher realms and higher rebirths, which are both existent and nonexistent. For example, the materialists and others who hold nihilistic views deny cause and effect, and those who proclaim violence as the essence of dharma do not have a pure path to higher realms. However, the Samkhyas, the naked ascetics, some followers of the supreme god, and the non-Buddhist meditators do have a path to higher realms. By abandoning evil and practicing virtue, they are born as humans and gods in the desire realm. By meditating on the four dhyānas, they are born in the form realm. By meditating on the four formless absorptions, they are born in the formless realm. The reason why non-Buddhists do not have a path to liberation is that they do not abandon what is called the belief in a personal self, that is, the thought of grasping at "I" as self. Because of this, the belief in "I" as self, which has come down from beginningless samsara, is strong. On top of that, the tenets also establish that "I" as self exists with many distinctions, and they meditate on that meaning. Moreover, there is no other antidote to that belief in self, so they cannot abandon it. And that belief in self is the root of all other afflictions. However, those good non-Buddhists meditate on the gross impermanence of birth, aging, sickness, and death, understand this life and the desire realm as suffering, consider gross phenomena such as forms to be unreal, have few desires and are content, practice loving-kindness and compassion, practice equanimity by meditating on enemies and friends as equal, and abandon the four roots, etc., as view and practice.

Because there are good deeds, there is a path to higher realms. There are four schools of Buddhist philosophy: the Vaibhashika, the Sautrantika, the Cittamatra, and the Madhyamaka. The first two are Hinayana Shravakas, and the latter two are Mahayana. The reason for classifying them as Mahayana and Hinayana is that the Hinayana Vinaya considers the Buddha's teachings to be ultimate, while the Mahayana Sutras consider the Buddha's teachings to be ultimate, hence the names. Therefore, there are so-called Hinayana proponents and Mahayana proponents, with schools known as Hinayana schools and schools known as Mahayana schools. However, classifying someone as Hinayana or Mahayana is not necessarily solely determined by their philosophical school. If the thoughts and actions of the Mahayana path arise in one's mind, then that person is a Mahayana practitioner. If the thoughts and actions of the Hinayana arise in one's mind, then that person is a Hinayana practitioner. If neither of these arises in one's mind, then no matter what scriptures one reads, what views one holds, or what school one believes in, one is neither a Mahayana practitioner nor a Hinayana practitioner. Furthermore, there are those who hold Mahayana views but practice the Hinayana path, and those who hold Hinayana views but practice the Mahayana path. There are also those who are both Mahayana practitioners, and those who are both Hinayana practitioners. There are very many who hold philosophical views but do not practice the path, and it is impossible for someone who practices the path to not have philosophical views. Among these schools, the Vaibhashika believes that: knowledge is of two types, mind and mental factors; objects are the ten forms, etc.; arising and ceasing, etc., are non-associated compositional factors; space, etc., are the three unconditioned phenomena; and past and future phenomena exist as substances, each with its own distinct nature, and they believe that they have an element of true existence. They believe that coarse objects and constant objects, etc., are not truly existent. They say that because objects and faculties are truly existent, consciousness arises, and the eye can truly see forms. Within this school, the good schools such as the Kashmir Vaibhashika believe that: all conditioned phenomena are impermanent because they are destroyed in an instant. And they believe that the self of a person is merely imputed and does not exist as a substance. The bad schools such as the Mahasanghika believe that:
