All conditioned phenomena are impermanent because they eventually decay. However, they claim that they do not decay in an instant, and therefore they accept that there are some kinds of permanent entities. Although there is no self, such as the permanent, singular, and independent self posited by the non-Buddhists, they generally consider the mere concept of self to be substantially existent and truly existent. Although there is no actual path to liberation due to the fault of the view of self, they take refuge in deities and possess the discipline, study, contemplation, and meditation motivated by the desire for liberation. Therefore, they gradually become beings who have the potential to attain liberation. The Vaibhashikas consider the seven Abhidharma treatises to be the words of the Buddha, and the sutras to be interpretable and mostly indirect. Therefore, they believe that philosophical views must be accepted according to the system of the treatises, and they identify the treatises with the Great Vaibhasha. The Sautrantikas, on the other hand, believe that among the phenomena mentioned above, unconditioned phenomena and non-associated compositional factors are merely conceptual constructs and therefore not truly existent. The continuity of forms and the continuity of consciousness are not truly established. Past and future phenomena are also merely conceptual constructs, and only present atoms and momentary consciousness are indivisible and truly existent. The eye does not see forms, and eye consciousness does not directly see forms. What eye consciousness sees is the appearance of form that arises in eye consciousness itself, which is known as the aspect of form, which is understood by consciousness. However, they believe that while the aspect appears, there are forms and other external objects that produce the aspect. They believe that the seven Abhidharma treatises are not the words of the Buddha, and that there are errors in the treatises such as the Great Vaibhasha. Therefore, they believe that the tenets must be in accordance with the sutras. Both of these schools of thought believe that the Buddha's teachings are only these Vinaya Pitakas spoken for the sake of the Shravakas, and that all the Mahayana sutras such as the Prajnaparamita, Ratnakuta, and Mahasamghata are not the words of the Buddha. They say that the difference between Mahayana and Hinayana is the difference in the actions of individuals, not the difference in scriptures. All that they consider to be truly existent, and their denial of Mahayana, are faults of erroneous tenets. The lack of self of the individual and the momentariness
