taranatha1717 Commentary on Confession of Downfalls.g2.0f

All are included. The Sangha mainly refers to the Bodhisattvas who have attained the irreversible stage. Here, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also mentioned incidentally, because the ordinary beings who have not attained the Bodhisattva stage have less attainment in terms of abandonment and realization than the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Because from the aspect of those qualities, (the Sangha) becomes the Lama, and also in order to accomplish those qualities, one takes refuge. The qualities of the Buddha are wisdom, compassion, and inconceivable power, etc. Among the qualities of the Dharma, from the perspective of the result, it is the abandonment of all faults and the perfection of qualities; from the perspective of the path, it is the abandonment of the two obscurations and the attainment of completeness; and for those who have not realized these, realization depends on the Dharma of scripture. The qualities of the Sangha are that, because those Dharmas of the path have arisen in the mindstream, many faults have been abandoned and many qualities are possessed, and they diligently strive to liberate sentient beings with great compassion. Therefore, these Three Jewels are worthy of refuge and worthy of veneration. Third, "To the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Shakyamuni, I prostrate," and so on. Because he sees the nature of reality without error, he is the Tathagata. Because he has conquered the four maras, he is the Arhat. Because the appearance of ignorance of all dharmas has vanished and the appearance of wisdom has increased, he is the Perfectly Awakened Buddha. Shakya is the master of power, possessing abundant strength and courage. Thuba is the conqueror of enemies, that is, he has abandoned the two obscurations along with their imprints. Only this much appears in the scripture itself. If, as is commonly recited, the words "Bhagavan" and "Glorious Victor" are added, then because he possesses the six perfections, he is the Bhagavan. Because he has accomplished the perfection of benefit for himself and others, he is Glorious. Because he has conquered all unfavorable factors, he is the Victor. Combining them in this way, because it is indivisible, it is Vajra. Because it is solid, it is Essence. Because it destroys all the suffering of beings, it is the Great Destroyer, that is, Vajra Essence Great Destroyer. In order to dispel ignorance, it is the Radiance of Jewels. Because he is the master of the ocean of Dharmadhatu.

The wheel of, that is, the Dharma wheel, with the light that illuminates wisdom, with the play of miraculous powers, and with the infinite manifestation, manifestly realizing the play of Brahma's light. Others, similar to this, from the place of Brahma, not being stained by the fault of offenses, are called lotus, that is, manifestly realizing the play of the lotus's light. Here, the so-called play is explained as the three kinds of miracles, which also seems good. Being enriched by the glory of the seven noble riches, hence the glory of wealth. Being distinguished by the glory of the Dharma of the four mindfulnesses, hence the glory of mindfulness. For proclaiming the vast Dharma that possesses the essence of the Sugata, endowed with the glory of marks and signs, hence the glory of marks and signs is extremely proclaimed. Being empowered over the Dharma banner adorned with the crest of the five faculties and six abhijñās, hence the king of the banner of the crest of the faculties. For suppressing and destroying all that is encompassed by afflictions and suffering from the harm of all beings, hence the glory of extreme suppression. For showing the means of victory from the battlefield of the four maras, hence extreme victory in the battlefield. For subduing the harms of the world and causing the realization of the Dharma of extreme suppression to pass away, hence passing away by suppression. For showing the vast pure and radiant realm, hence the glory of the arrangement of all-illuminating appearance. For fulfilling the aspirations of beings, hence the jewel of activities, and with the lotus whose petals of wisdom are blooming, suppressing the maras and heretics with the lotus, hence the jewel lotus suppresses. Similar to the jewel lotus, dwelling greatly in that wisdom and activity, being immovable by any Dharma of grasping and being grasped in delusion, like the king of mountains, that is, the king of mountains dwelling greatly on the jewel lotus. To those, the beginning and the end, both combined with the great of vastness, apply to all, and to the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth, the expression of greatness is abbreviated, which also applies to the upper and lower parts, and others without the word of greatness, only stating the name, is an abbreviation, others should also be understood, in the abbreviated statement, the beginning should also be understood.
