Although it is merely acknowledged that it is labeled as being the same as that, however, if it is done according to the way self-grasping grasps, let alone the way self-grasping conceptually grasps, even the way self-grasping innately grasps is impossible. Why is that? Because even innate grasping grasps the meaning of something permanent and independent. Here, sentient beings, self, life, person, and nourisher, even in the minds of those who are born in the world, become synonyms for self, because they grasp themselves and others as sentient beings. I am nourished by my parents. I nourished horses and cows, etc., and when I die, when the power of life is completely cut off, I am cut off. Like Devadatta, thinking that this sentient being no longer exists, I also have wisdom, I also have desire, I also have scriptures, and I also have flesh and blood, etc., which are full of forms, and wisdom, etc., do this and that, etc., which are flowing forms, because they think of it as a person of the individual, and whether it is oneself or another, thinking of Gyalsing, I did this thing, and I practice this asceticism for the sake of liberation, etc., also because I want to be a thinker. Also, if it is done according to the way the tenets are established, only sentient beings and individuals are done according to the way the Buddhists of their own school praise them, life is mainly praised by the Jains, etc., the nourisher is mainly praised by the Ishvara speakers, etc., and the self is praised by all the heretics. Among them, the meaning of sentient being is the thinker. That is also non-existent, if the thinker exists outside of thought, the thinker who is not thought exists mutually with thought, because one does not see the action of the other, so it is not possible to think of the object of the thinker. If it exists as cause and effect, then when one exists, the other does not exist, how can the thinker think? If the essence is one, then since the mind and thought are impermanent, the thinker also becomes impermanent, so it cannot be established by its own essence. Here, by "thinker," when thinking, it is the general name of the consciousness that follows the object, but it is not only referring to the mental factor of thought.

No. What is this called "life"? It cannot be the same as "self," because life has birth and cessation, while self cannot have birth and cessation. If it is different, then like the limbs of the body, life cannot be truly existent, nor is it something to be cherished. Life is said to be lifespan, warmth, and that which the consciousness relies on. Even according to the assertions of the Hearer Schools, it is not reasonable. If the very place where consciousness relies is life, then it is not separate from body or mind. If merely the cause of the arising and abiding of consciousness is called reliance, then it does not go beyond the four conditions: objective condition, dominant condition, causal condition, and immediate condition. However, none of these are life, nor are they the basis of karmic results. Warmth and the place of warmth are not separate from the body, and lifespan is not observed to be separate from the state of body and mind. Therefore, the term "life" is merely a designation. The term "person" (Pudgala) refers to one who, by the power of cause or karma, transmigrates in other states experiencing the results. This is the meaning of person, that the agent and the experiencer of the results are the same. This is not reasonable, for if the agent and the experiencer are the same, then it would follow that one experiences the results at the time of action. If the experiencer is the agent, then it would follow that one performs the action at the time of experiencing the results. If one neither acts nor experiences, but is still the agent and the experiencer, then everything would become agents and experiencers. Therefore, the person is not established as a real entity, but is merely a conceptual imputation. Shantideva also said, "Relying on a single continuum, it is shown to be the agent and the enjoyer." What is this called "nourishment"? Is it the continuation of the earlier continuum by food, dwelling, utensils, and later similar types? Or does a single agent nourish a single so-called "self"? According to the former, although it is the view of our own school, various causes produce various results, and only the continuum of things exists.
