Dorje Drala Master's Teachings JT351 Commentary on the Maitreya Prayer. Commentary on the Maitreya Prayer. ༄། །General Meaning Explained. Commentary on the Maitreya Prayer. Oṃ svāsti. Homage to the Buddha! This widely known "Noble Maitreya's Prayer" is found in the forty-first chapter of the Noble Jewel Heap Sutra, called the Noble Maitreya's Question Sutra. In it, the perfectly complete Buddha was dwelling in the country of Vargana, on the slope of the mountain where crocodiles devour children, in a forest of terrifying wild animals, together with five hundred great Shravakas, including All-Knowing, and ten thousand great Bodhisattvas, including Maitreya. Then, Noble Maitreya asked, "What qualities does a Bodhisattva possess that cause them to abandon the lower realms, not be influenced by bad friends, and attain perfect enlightenment?" The Teacher, the Bhagavan, replied, "Having one quality will cause that to happen, which is the Bodhicitta with excellent superior intention. Similarly, to summarize, two qualities are seeking shamatha and being skilled in vipashyana. Three qualities are great compassion, firmly contemplating emptiness, and not being conceited about it. Four qualities are abiding in morality, having no doubt about the Dharma, delighting in meditation, and not wavering from correct acceptance. Five qualities are abiding in emptiness, not seeking the faults of others, reflecting on oneself, delighting in the Dharma, and benefiting others. Six qualities are the absence of the three: greed, hatred, and delusion, as well as immediately answering questions correctly, being close to those who are worthy of closeness, and being an object of emptiness. 17-657 Seven qualities are mindfulness, being skilled in the Dharma, diligence, joy, pliancy, samadhi, and wisdom. Here, the six branches of enlightenment and being skilled in the Dharma are counted as seven. Being skilled in the Dharma is in terms of all aspects, while wisdom is in terms of the aspect of reality. Eight qualities are the eightfold noble path. Nine qualities are the nine successive absorptions. Ten qualities are the vajra-like samadhi, and striving diligently for what is and is not, and the object of skillful means, and various appearances, and all appearances, and all.

Clarity, Precious Moon, Moon Lamp, and the Arm Ornament of the Victory Banner are the ten samadhis. Then, Lord Maitreya praised the Bhagavan through the six perfections. Then, when Ananda praised the noble Maitreya, the Teacher rejoiced and said: "Not only are you praising me now, but also ten immeasurable eons ago, there appeared a Bhagavan named Manifestly Knowing the Play of Light. At that time, a Brahmin boy named Good Protector went to the pleasure garden and saw that Buddha, and great faith arose in him. He made the aspiration: 'May I also become like this body!' Having made this aspiration, he lay down on the ground, thinking, 'If this aspiration is fulfilled, may the feet of this Buddha touch my body.' As he was thinking this, the feet of that Teacher touched the Brahmin Good Protector, and immediately he obtained the forbearance of non-arising phenomena. That Teacher also commanded his retinue: 'Do not step on the body of this Brahmin boy.' Having obtained countless qualities such as clairvoyance, he praised that Teacher with countless qualities. That Good Protector is this great being Maitreya." Then, the noble Ananda asked: "Maitreya obtained forbearance at that time, what is the reason that he has not yet become a Buddha?" There are two kinds of adornments that Bodhisattvas completely uphold: the first is the adornment of beings and the complete upholding of beings, and the second is the adornment of fields and the complete upholding of fields. Maitreya and I are generally similar in terms of these two kinds of complete upholding. This Maitreya is one who has truly entered, and after obtaining the noble ground, after forty-two eons, he generated the mind of enlightenment. If we go by that, after this Fortunate Eon has passed, in ninety-four eons, I would be destined to become a Buddha, but I exerted great effort and quickly became a Buddha. He taught two sets of ten dharmas for quickly becoming a Buddha. The first is: giving away wealth, wives, and children, head and eyes, kingdom and possessions, blood and bones, and all limbs. The second set of ten is: the perfections.
