The benefits of that are: merely regretting and confessing, the flow of past negative karma will not increase, and will also become purified; in the future, being cautious and preventing, non-virtue will be cut off, thereby being liberated from the lower realms and transforming into higher realms; the seeds of virtue will increase, and will also become the cause of liberation and omniscience. Rejoicing in Merit The fourth is: all the Buddhas and Buddha-sons of the ten directions, the self-realized Buddhas, as well as those with learning and without learning, whatever merit of all beings, I rejoice in all of those. In the realms of the ten directions, all the victorious Buddhas, and the Buddha-sons, the Bodhisattvas, and the self-realized Buddhas, and the Hearers, those with learning, namely the Stream-enterer, the Once-returner, and the Non-returner, and those without learning, namely the Arhat, and beings, namely the individual ordinary beings of the six realms, their merit, whatever virtue they have done, I rejoice in all of those. Rejoicing is being extremely happy, and "following" means that whoever has done something, or obtained some result, again focusing on and entering into that, is like following after someone who has gone before. Generally, merit is divided into merit and non-merit, and the three immovable actions, and the merit accompanied by merit and wisdom, etc., but here it refers to all virtuous dharmas. For these confessions and rejoicings, whether it is one's own good or bad deeds, or encouraging others to do them, or rejoicing in what others have done, and praising and extolling them, one can confess and rejoice. However, the object of confession is mainly one's own negative deeds, while the object of rejoicing is mainly the virtue of others. For one's own virtuous deeds, if one regrets, the virtue will not increase; if one has no arrogance and cultivates joy, the virtue will increase. Rejoicing in the virtue of others neither diminishes the virtue of others, nor does one exert effort or do anything, yet one obtains great merit in one's own mind-stream, therefore it is a superior virtue. The noble Bodhisattva, the manifestation of the Dharmadhatu

Those who understand and realize thoroughly, and who gain clear appearance in all things, will also gain as much as the worldly virtues that clearly appear in their own object of focus, by rejoicing in them. For example, the virtues performed by the sentient beings of the thirty great thousand worlds for hundreds of kalpas, a single noble Bodhisattva sees clearly and distinctly with his clairvoyance. Even if one meditates on a single session of rejoicing without focusing on each of them individually, the Bodhisattva will gain in his own mindstream at that instant, through the power of that rejoicing, as much virtue as those sentient beings accumulated during that time. Similarly, it should be extended to infinity. Among them, sentient beings of the desire realm are not in meditative equipoise, those of the form realm are in meditative equipoise in the four dhyanas, and those of the formless realm are only in meditative equipoise in the samadhi of the formless absorptions. All the remaining noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, their physical basis belongs to the three realms, but the mental basis of the Hearer and Solitary Buddha Arhats is only beyond the three realms. The minds of the learners are also accompanied by the minds of the three realms, but the nature of the mind-stream, whatever part of it that has become the stream of the noble ones, should be known to be beyond the three realms. The mental body of the Arhats without remainder, and the sensory body of those with remainder, and the noble Mahayanists, their bodies are also beyond the three realms, so what need is there to mention the mind? Thus, even ordinary beings belonging to the three realms, there are those who have entered the path and those who have not. Here, those who have entered the path are included among the Bodhisattvas and learners, so "all beings" refers only to all sentient beings of the three realms who have not entered the path. The Hearer's accumulation path practitioners and application path practitioners are the near cause of the noble Hearer learners, so they are considered to belong to them and are not mentioned, and the Solitary Buddha's accumulation path practitioners are the same, and there are also a few application path practitioners and noble learners.
