Five thousand. It was said that a sacrifice involving the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of birds, goats, and sheep was to be performed, and for this, hundreds of thousands of Tirthikas and Brahmins gathered to perform the ritual. At that time, all the animals were bound. The Teacher, from who knows where, came to their sacrificial site. He looked at all the Brahmins and Tirthikas, and they all froze. The king, astonished, came over. The Teacher said, "If you kill so many beings, you will die quickly, and after death, you will be reborn in hell. Release them." As soon as they were released, the Teacher placed his hand on the king's head, and the king was healed of his illness. There, the people of the sacrifice attained ease, and many developed special wisdom. It is said that in the country of Cañca, a Turkic king was walking on the road near the Teacher's residence, and there, many people spoke ill of the Teacher. A disciple of the Teacher heard this and cursed, "May you all become mute!" The king and his entourage immediately became mute. They were very frightened and prayed to the Teacher. To demonstrate the power of the Buddhists, the Teacher said, "Except for one, may all be able to speak." And it happened as he said. The Teacher then went to the central region, to Varanasi. A Tirthika pandita who was considered learned, named Madasudanavararasvati Madasudanavararasvati), was sitting on a high seat amidst a large entourage. The Teacher pointed at him with a threatening gesture, and he fell from his seat. In the region of Mathura, Mukundavarti Mukundavarti), who had previously practiced as a Buddhist yogi to some extent, later became a Tirthika yogi. He had mastered the practice of Ahutacandali Ahutacandali) and controlled many people, and was known as an accomplished one. The Teacher subdued him with a glance. Now, in the destroyed city of Mathura [or ultimately], when the Teacher and two or three disciples arrived, Mukundavarti and his entourage also gathered there. Countless people from the city also gathered there, saying, "Let us see the signs of accomplishment of these two!" Mukunda was skilled in illusionary mantras, and was formerly the great king of the Tajiks, Hamehubacapa, and his son Akapara, and so on.
