He urged (Naropa) to become an accomplished one. He went to the east and searched everywhere for Tilopa, but could not find him. Once, in a temple, the monks gathered to eat, and the door was locked from the inside. When Naropa was in the room, a blue, dirty man came and was grilling many live fish with tongs. Naropa could not stop him. Afterwards, the monks came and scolded him. The man said, "If you don't like it, I can put them back in the water." It is said that he threw the cooked fish into the water, and the fish swam away. Naropa knew that he was an accomplished one, so he followed him, prostrated to him, and prayed. But he was angry and beat Naropa, not saying a single word. When Naropa thought, "Is he Tilopa?" he would say, "Yes, yes." When Naropa thought, "Is he not?" he would say, "No, no." There, Naropa knew his mind and also knew that he was Tilopa. Sometimes, he behaved like a yogi, and sometimes, he pretended to be a madman. But Naropa did not have any doubts. Once, at a wedding place in the city, he took a lot of vegetables and offered them to the guru. The guru seemed to like it very much, and Naropa thought, "The guru likes this," so he went to the original place again. Because in India, there is no custom of inviting guests twice in one day, he stole the container of vegetables and brought it back. People chased him, and although he was hit by many sticks and stones, he did not drop the container and offered the vegetables to the guru. Another time, at the edge of a narrow water with many lotuses, the guru walked back and forth. Naropa asked, "May I enter the water and make a bridge?" The guru said, "Yes." So he did. The guru stepped on Naropa's head and jumped over. The guru said, "I will be back soon, you stay here." The guru did not come back for a long time. When he came back, the guru walked over as before. There, the worms in the lotus sucked all the blood from Naropa's body, and he was about to die. Later, he gradually recovered and followed the guru. On the way, he met the king's daughter Dolila being carried. Tilopa said, "Snatch this king's daughter!" Naropa pretended to be a Brahmin and said auspicious words.

After doing that, he put flowers on the girl's head and forcefully dragged her away. The servants beat Naropa so that he couldn't stand up and fell to the ground like a corpse. Then, the guru revived him with his methods, and they continued on their way. Seeing a minister's wife and a bride passing by, he spoke as before. The process of reviving him was the same as before. There, thinking that the guru liked women, he spent money to buy a high-caste girl from her parents, and Naropa himself married her, intending to offer her to the guru the next day. That night, he enjoyed her himself. The next day, the guru rubbed Naropa's mark (penis) with a stone. There, he was in great pain for many days. After the guru chanted mantras, he recovered. After that, he offered the woman to the guru. Once, when the girl looked at Naropa with contempt, the guru said, "You don't like me, you like him." So he beat her and Naropa together. Those were all to test whether Naropa's faith was firm. As a result, Naropa not only did not develop distrust, but his faith increased even more. Another time, the guru and disciple were on top of a tall building. The guru said, "If someone could jump down from here, I would be very happy." Naropa thought that the guru would quickly revive me with his methods, so Naropa jumped down, and all his limbs were broken. After that, the guru did not appear for many days. Thinking that he was definitely going to die this time, there was no other choice. The guru came and chanted mantras, and he recovered. In this way, he served the guru for twelve years with countless hardships, but it is said that he did not even hear a single kind word. Later, once in an empty plain, the guru said, "Now I will impart the teachings, offer a mandala." Naropa said, "There is no water or flowers here." The guru said, "Don't you have blood and fingers on your body?" So he drew blood and drew a mandala with blood. He cut off all his fingers and piled them up. There, Tilopa collected Naropa's fingers and threw them on Naropa's face with mud and saliva. Naropa immediately fainted. When he woke up, he directly saw the true nature of all dharmas. His fingers also healed themselves. Again, he bestowed all the teachings and subsequent instructions. There, Naropa became the lord of yoga. Tilopa said, "Now you should not argue, do not serve disciples, do not teach. Just like that."
