As Vapon Dulwa Lha said in the Wheel of Differentiated Sects: They reside in the east, west, and snowy mountains. There are sects that say the world has passed away, and sects that say it is eternal. The fivefold Mahasangha, the root Sarvastivadins and the Kashyapiyas, the Mahiputra and the Dharmaguptakas, the disciples of the learned red-robed ones, the sects that speak with differentiation, are the sects of the Sarvastivadins. The abode of Victory Grove and the indestructible mountain, the abode of the great monastery are proclaimed. The Earth-Increasing Mountain and the Protectors, the sects of the sons of the Sthaviras, are all revered by everyone, there are three kinds. Due to the different meanings of the regions and the different teachers, they became eighteen different kinds. It is said that this is the system of the eighteen sects that branched out from the four root sects. Moreover, it is said in many tantras that the root sects are four, and the method of counting the four is not according to the views of the sons of the Sthaviras, but according to the same way as this, so only this system should be adopted. Because it is said to be extracted from the treatises of Master Vasubandhu, the source is also good. In the question of the age of the monks, it is similar to these four root sects. Six are made for the Mahasanghikas, and five are made for the Mahasammatas, etc. Although some slight differences are mentioned, one must adhere to one's own system. In the previous different counting methods, many different names have appeared. Most of them are cases where the meaning is the same but the names are different, and some are indeed different counting methods. Among them, the Kashyapiyas arose from the separation of some disciples of the Arhat Kashyapa. This sect is also called "Rain of Goodness." Similarly, the Mahiputras, the Dharmaguptakas, and the Red-Robed ones are the followers of the elders who hold their respective names. The Samkrantivadins, the Lamakas, and the Red-Robed ones are one group. The Chaityakas and the Eastern Mountain School are also one group, and they are the disciples of one called the Great God Ever-Moving. Separated from that are the Siddharthakas and the Royal Mountain School. According to the later system, those two are not counted among the eighteen. The World-Transcended Mountain and the Crow Mountain are one group. The same term is also the general name for the Mahasanghikas.
