Possessing manifest noble qualities, especially without a mind of self-interest even in dreams, and engaging in limitless gates of samadhi, being extremely gentle, tamed, and also steadfast. Able to refute evil tenets, discipline bad conduct, and so on, being particularly sharp. Not being complacent with learning, and giving Dharma without material possessions, etc., like this, engaging in various enjoyments, achieving the third ground through many reasons. Furthermore, this teacher initially built a monastery and resided in a forest called Beluvana in a part of the country of Magadha, explaining and teaching profound Mahayana Dharma to eight disciples who were disciplined and learned. All of them attained forbearance, and in order to generate faith in people, manifested miraculous powers, all becoming those who had crossed the ocean of sutras. That place became known as the "Dharma Sprout Monastery." There, the Five Treatises of Maitreya were also recorded in writing. He also composed most of the treatises such as the Abhidharma-samuccaya, the Mahāyāna-samgraha, the Five Treatises on the Grounds, and the commentary on the Abhisamayalankara. After that, in the city of Sagari near the western region, King Zamo Fang, as the patron, gathered all the monks from the four directions in the monastery called Ushmapuri. There, the noble Asanga taught much Dharma according to each person's capacity, explaining the three pitakas of the Hearer Vehicle and about five hundred Mahayana sutras, and guiding everything to the correct meaning, thereby awakening the lineage of the Mahayana, and increasing the wisdom of the meaning of the sutras for more than a thousand people. Previously, the Mahayana was very prosperous, but later, due to the influence of the times, wisdom became shallow, and it was gradually destroyed by three external enemies. At the beginning of the time when this teacher appeared, although there were many monks who adhered to the Mahayana, no one understood the Mahayana treatises at all. Although there were many people who recited each sutra, no one truly understood the meaning of the sutra. Therefore, the teacher himself, together with eight outstanding disciples, taught the Dharma there.

At that time, the teachings of the Mahayana, which had declined for a while, flourished again, and this was renowned in all directions. At that time, the king, who was profound in Dharma, recited the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom. He thought, "This teacher is said to be a noble being and knows the minds of others. If that is true, I should praise his qualities. If it is not true, he is deceiving the people, and I should challenge him in the midst of the people and humiliate him." So, he consulted with his ministers, Brahmins, and about five hundred trusted people. In the courtyard of the palace, in the midst of many people, he invited the teacher and his entourage. He offered abundant food and clothing. Inside the house, he hid a black buffalo smeared with white clay. He filled a golden vase with various impure substances, sealed it with honey, covered it with cloth, and held it in his hand. He asked, "What is in this house? What am I holding in my hand?" The teacher answered truthfully. The king thought, "Even small hidden things can be known by small clairvoyance, let alone knowing minds." Then, he mentally asked the teacher three questions about the words of the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom and three questions about the meaning, and the teacher answered them as they were. The teacher also composed some short treatises corresponding to the three natures and so on. The three questions about the words were: "The term 'Bodhisattva,' what is it a synonym for?" When the teacher replied, "A Bodhisattva has not been truly seen," does this not become an unpredicted view? The example of a very large bird with a body of five hundred yojanas, what meaning does this large body relate to? If the signs of mountains and forests are not seen, and it is said to be near the ocean, where is the boundary where the signs are not seen? The first question relates to inner emptiness, the second to the great power of virtuous deeds, and the third to the great and supreme Dharma. The three questions about the meaning were: Is the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness) substantially existent or non-existent? Since all phenomena are said to be without inherent existence, is that which is without inherent existence also without inherent existence? Does emptiness make all phenomena empty?
