In the northern regions of Delhi and Malawa, King Kanika was appointed as a young king. Twenty-eight sources of jewels were newly mined, so he existed with great wealth. He also built one temple in each of the four directions and constantly offered to thirty thousand monks of both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. Therefore, King Kanishka and Kanika must be understood as not being the same person. That teacher Makhol is the same Brahmin Thubka Nagpo mentioned slightly above, and he is known by synonymous names such as Dawo, Tayang, Makhol, Pakhol, Thubka, Chodan Rabjor, and Mati Zitra. Furthermore, in the city of Kotana, a merchant had ten daughters. All of them took refuge, observed the five precepts, and worshipped the Three Jewels. Each of them married great men of the land. The youngest one married a wealthy Brahmin named Sangha Guhya, and eventually gave birth to a son named Nagpo. He became extremely proficient in all the Vedas and their branches, and was very respectful to his parents, so he was known as Makhol and Pakhol. He became extremely proficient in the union of tantric lineages and in logic, and even the great Lord Ishvara personally prophesied. Then, with the pride of debate, he defeated the Buddhists in regions such as Odibisha, Gaura, Tirahuti, and Kamarupa. Some were placed in heresy, some had their wealth plundered, and some were forced to pay homage to heretics, and so on, were degraded. His mother thought: If he goes to Nalanda, he will be tamed by those champions of debate, the mantra-accomplishers, and will enter the Dharma. She thought that the Buddhists of other regions were like the hairs on a horse's ear, while the Buddhists of Magadha were like the body of a horse. She said that unless he could defeat the Buddhists of Magadha, he would not gain the fame of debate. Therefore, he went to Magadha, and until he ordained, it was the same as before. He stayed there.

When he became the holder of the three baskets, the Holy Mother prophesied in a dream, "You should praise the Buddha a lot. The karmic obscurations accumulated from previously committing sins against the Dharma will be purified." Therefore, he was encouraged and, for the purpose of confession, composed praises to the one worthy of praise. It is said that he also composed over a hundred praises of the Buddha. The most excellent of all the praises is the "One Hundred and Fifty Praises." When Makhol entered the Buddhist teachings, there were a great many heretics and Brahmins who became monks in the monasteries of the four directions. Even the most excellent and wealthy Brahmin, Thupka Nakpo (meaning "Difficult to Conquer Black"), abandoned his own tenets like spitting out ashes. If he enters the Buddhist teachings, then the Buddha's Dharma must be very wonderful. Because of this, in the glorious Nālandā alone, more than a thousand Brahmins became monks, and just as many heretics became monks. Because that teacher possessed great merit, even when he went to the city for alms every day, he received countless foods. He effortlessly supported two hundred and fifty meditators and two hundred and fifty reciters, a total of five hundred monks. The praises composed by this teacher are as blessed as the Buddha's own words, because the Victorious One himself prophesied that he would make praises. All the praises composed by him spread throughout all lands, and even singers and comedians recited them, so that all the people of the land naturally developed faith in the Buddha. The praises alone were of great benefit to the flourishing of the teachings. In his later years, King Kaniṣka sent messengers to invite the teacher, but he was too old to go. He wrote a letter, which converted the king to the Dharma. The teacher sent his own disciple, named Yeshe Nyenpa (Wise Fame), as a teacher to teach the Dharma to the king. In addition to what is recorded in the scriptures such as the Sutras, there are also ten Jataka tales transmitted from ear to ear by abbots and teachers.
